This is very close to my house, I saw the road closure while walking my dog. I hope all these kids are ok! |
Baffling story. Six or more teens, age 14-17 (friends? family members?) in one car, driving at 6 am Monday morning, alcohol involved. Had they been up all night? Or started drinking first thing in the morning? So confused. |
Party on Sunday night. Alcohol/drugs. Impaired so no seatbelt.
It’s typical, sadly. Car accidents are the number one killer of teens. |
Possibly out all night, yes. I'm not sure what is baffling about it. I wonder what sort of history these kids have as far as being in trouble. I hope the are all ok. |
Of course they aren’t ok. They were thrown from a car. |
Car accidents are the second killer of teens, second to guns. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/nejmc2201761 |
On a school night/early morning? Or do some of the area schools have the whole week off this week? |
Teens are resilient. I also hope they are ok or will recover. |
It is not typical for seven teens to be driving drunk before 5 AM on a Monday Morning. |
Not sure about the private schools. What parents allow their kids out between 4 and 5 AM on a Monday morning? |
Maybe the kids snuck out? |
Definitely not Fairfax County. Neighborhood is in the Marshall HS area. Not sure about private. |
+1 |
I knew a few kids in high school who showed up smelling like alcohol because they had started drinking before school. I'm 40, and I'm not sure any of them are alive anymore, but they were definitely driving to school in the mornings. |
I’m in my 40s and definitely knew people who would “pregame” before school. At the start of a really short week, when everyone’s already mentally checked out? Very possible.
Or they were already out of school and this was the end of a long night. Everyone crashes at someone’s house for a few hours, then they wake up, have a couple eye-openers, and get on the road to get dropped off at home. Or they were coming back from an early morning swim practice at Providence. That would account for the mixed ages in the car. Throw in some alcohol and take away the seatbelts, and it’s a recipe for an early morning disaster. Whatever the reason for the day/time of the crash, the reality is, it happened. And it will happen again. Stop excusing your kids and pretending they’re safe because they’re in a private school, or get all As, or are an athlete, or an altar server, or whatever. Insist that they never get into a car with someone who’s been drinking, and that they always wear their seatbelt and make everyone else do the same. Model the same things yourselves. Those poor, poor families. |
