What is the appeal of Pitt?

Honest question…I am new to this forum and wanted to know why does everyone talk about Pitt and apply to Pitt?. Any insight would be helpful. Btw, I have a sophomore in high school.

A quality out-of-state option, not too far, that keeps costs close to instate if stats are good (these offers have diminished over time). Rolling admissions, so quick response.

Yup. Rolling admissions is the biggest thing. Location next—nice city, not too far from DC. Solid school academically. It’s one of my kid’s three likelies (already admitted with merit), and it’s wonderful to know that they have a quality option.

I have no in-depth knowledge of the school, but I had to go there for work once and the campus was great -- and I was happily surprised by how great the city was! Really gorgeous.

Solid school academically. Urban setting with a campus feel. Great mid size city with good food and neighborhoods. Greek like is not dominant (but there if you are interested). A good mix of serious students but also a fun place to be for 4 years.

My kid is a first year CS major and very happy.

Pittsburgh is a GREAT town for a young person. I went to grad school there. TONS of things to do. Relatively safe and low'ish cost of living. And with several universities in the city, there are lots of young people around. Plus, it's only 4 hours from (3.5 if you drive fast with no traffic) so it's a doable drive: 270--> 70--->Breezewood--->Pa turnpike. Done.

About 5 yrs ago they really were throwing merit money around $20-30K. That increased their popularity a lot in the DMV. Then they started whittling it back down. Some accepted students don't get merit offers now, others as little as $5k.

Is Pitt direct admit CS? Any special requirments to keep that major like UMD (C- in certain classes)

It's the pits! Ar, ar, ar

Seriously, though, Pittsburgh is a fun and vibrant city with nice museums and a good arts and music scene, and U of Pitt is awash in money and research opportunities. Unsurprising that it's been "discovered."

This, plus rolling admissions. My class of 2020 kid was offered $20/year in merit money. She didn’t attend.

They no longer do that type of merit aid but most kids who go there really like it so Pitt’s strategy to increase dmv applications definitely seems to have worked!

A student is admitted to the college—the School of Computing and Information. You need some four or so core classes to declare the CS major. Need a C or better in these classes to declare and then have a C or better in classes needed for major.

In addition to what's already been said, I hear student after student after student SO happy at Pitt. So it's that sweet spot of good reputation, good academics, good city/campus life, PLUS students seem happy.

It's really interesting. I had several college friends who lived in Pittsburgh, but didn't want to go to Pitt and attended VT instead.

Just was talking with the parent of a freshman and her DS absolutely loves it. It’s a solid school and the rolling mission it has definitely opened people’s eyes to it.
