Bethesda Premier Cup Tournament 2023

Can someone explain how this works?

Liverpool FC International is 'ranked' 9th in Maryland for U13's. They are in the 4th Bracket of the U13's for tournament.
Also in the 4th Bracket are the Baltimore Celtic ECNL and the Loudoun ECNL teams.

it works the way the tournament wants it to work an d don't waste your time trying to figure out youth sports. Your kids don't care as much as the parents do.

What's the issue? If the level feels like it will be too low, the team should go out and win by large margins each game. Then maybe next time they have something to show that they deserve higher?

I'll assume the true 4th Bracket level kids care when ECNL teams are hammering them for medals and trophies.

No issue.
Makes complete sense to play against weaker teams so you can post pictures on IG that you won a tournament.

The U13 lineup is pretty legit... at least through the top four brackets. Blame your Coach for not requesting to drop down a bracket.

The Clubs don’t pick the brackets. In some tournaments you can put in some preferences, but at Bethesda it’s always been a great mystery. And some years I’ve looked at brackets that seem mismatched and in the end no game has more than a one goal differential and other brackets are blow outs. And honestly winning one game in a blow out is fun for kids but by 12 or so they start to get that it’s just a bad bracket and they suddenly aren’t the best team ever.

Then ECNL is not all it's cracked up to be.
If two ECNL teams are in the 4th Bracket of a local tournament.

LFC also went 0-9 in league play this fall, so maybe they are right where they should be...

Mixed bag, especially for boys. Most of the boys talent is funneled into funded MLS academies attached to pro teams.

The rosters of DC United U14's and 15's support that narrative?
Will they show a high number of players were on ECNL teams prior?

That said, if ECNL level is high as advertised, then the replacements would also be high quality players, no?
Also, if you're one level below MLS Clubs Professional Academies, what are you doing in 4th Bracket of local tournament?

U13 is a weird year for boys in this area too, because it's when the "real" ECNL and MLS-Next teams form (not the "pre"), so many boys from smaller clubs with very talented teams (see Liverpool's U12 and U11 years for their 2011) gravitate towards the MLSNext badge (or E64 or ECNL or NL.... don't get me started on the stupidity of US soccer.)

This person was asking a fairly reasonable question.

Years ago, when my son played for Bethesda, they club looked for parent volunteers to help assign teams to brackets. Does that still happen?

No idea if it still happens, but I remember this too. An acquaintance of mine was in charge of seeding for our age group, and she asked a couple of us for advice on some teams that were hard to categorize for various reasons, like strong league play and poor tournament showings. She asked the manager of one of the teams—from Lower Patuxent MD—if she could provide additional information about the mixed record that would help with the decision, and the manager sent her an incredibly nasty email in response. After this team won their lower bracket championship, the angry manager tracked the BSC parent down and cursed her out.

The age group? U11.
