Person says he was sent to my address

Anonymous
Yesterday, I came home after a weekend away and found 2 packages on my doorstep that had been opened. Nothing was taken. I checked my Ring doorbell cam footage, and a guy had showed up at my door at around 5:15 pm the day before. He then stood on my front steps for almost 40 minutes, then opened the packages. He held his phone up to the camera and showed some text messages, saying “I was messaging someone on an app and they told me to meet them here, but I can now see that it was a scam and they were trying to take my money. I opened the packages to see if they were for me, as you can see, I didn’t take anything. Thought you should know your address is being used for this.”

Has anyone experienced anything like this? I called the police non-emergency line and they were completely unconcerned.

This is so weird and I’d be cautious when coming/going from your home for a while. I wonder if he made up the story. It’s odd someone would send him to an address with a Ring if they wanted to rob him.

The guy had left and no actual crime occurred that you can prove.
Unless he calls the Police there is not much they can do,,

Smart guy. He didn't want to be caught by police, since he realized there was a camera and he was seen opening the packages.

I wouldn't worry about the supposed scam meeting place.

Were they your packages?

Criminal steals a credit card, orders stuff to ship to random address, and sells the stuff (online payment) to someone else who goes to pick it up. Criminal stays nowhere near the geographic location of the package.

Marketplace can be a fantastic resource for finding interesting items, but these days there's a lot of scams. You see a fantastic item dirt cheap, such as beautiful patio teak furniture for a silly price out of downtown Baltimore? I saw a listing like this not too long ago. The seller profile showed a very unlikely seller. It's obvious scammers are hijacking accounts to make a listing seem legitimate.

Also, porch pick-ups are a thing. Sellers ask that you leave the money in a designated spot, and they will leave the box by the front door.

It sounds something like this happened. Maybe this guy waited because he was giving the seller the benefit of the doubt in case the seller was stuck on the road or something.
He's trying to tell you to be careful because someone is using your address as part of their scam.

Did he have an Android by chance?

I often sell things on a local mom2mom group and list things as porch pickup. For whatever reason, the map app that people use on only Android phones sends people to a house with the same numerical address, but on a different street on the other side of the main road. I can’t tell you the number of times people have ended up at that house looking for their PPU.

I wonder if something similar is happening in your instance?

That is very weird and you lucked out that you had an honest person show up and warn you. Maybe for the time being don’t have packages deliver to your house. Google your address to see if you see it pop up on Facebook or craigslist. If there is any way to contact that man, you might be able to ask what he was looking to buy so you can be on the lookout for similar items.

You're stupid, PP. You think the guy would have hung around for 40mts if he was a porch pirate?

I meant the fact he typed a msg and showed it on OP's camera was clever. I do think he was waiting too.

Uh, no. He waited for 40 minutes before he opened her packages. I think he was being honest, and he got scammed.
