My 18 y/o applied for a job at a small coffee shop/bakery. It’s not a corporate machine like Starbucks etc. You had to email your application to the owner. If any of you have experience when do you think my child should move on? Is waiting more than three days normal? |
|
Lol. 3 days is nothing. If it’s a small local bakery, they could be behind on emails, working through other logistical issues related to their business, etc. Give him at least a week and they should go in person and introduce
Them selves. |
Thanks for replying but the job said they needed someone immediately? |
|
I would wait two week, then reach out to reiterate your interest. If you don't hear 2 weeks later, I'd give up hope.
But also - if you're looking for a job, you should never be waiting on a response to move on! Be applying to other jobs, too. Never apply to less than 10 jobs if you're looking for a job, and try not to get attached to any one job. That goes for teenagers looking for a first service-industry job and white collar professionals deep into their career. |
Needing someone immediately it does not mean they’re going to reach out immediately. I’m not trying to be rude, but have you ever run a small business before? |
| Yes waiting 3 days is normal, even if they need someone immediately. If your child is really interested the the position, there’s nothing wrong with following up on their application. |
|
No I’ve never run a small business. Sorry guys I’m very green clearly.
Just to be clear, my kid just emailed an application where you had to write about yourself a bit and why you’re interested. But can you give some examples of how he should follow up? Like just another email saying what? Thanks everyone |
I don't think you need to wait a week. Could swing by at a non-busy time and say, "Hey, I just wanted to introduce myself because I'm really interested in working here. I emailed a resume, though I know you may not have seen it yet." Small businesses are all over the place: one might hire you on the spot, another might have forgotten their ad was up and actually they don't need anybody. |
| Until bread cools. |
No, they should go in to introduce themselves. That way they will stand out from the other applicants. A business is not going to jump on the first application they receive. Even if they need someone immediately. |
I’d stop by during a non-busy time. |
| You apply to multiple jobs and see what comes first and pays the best and most flexible hours. |
3 days is normal but I was the owner I would not look down on a teen following up in person. I would take that as a positive thing. YMMV |
| If they are very busy a 3 day wait is nothing - I would give them a few more and then follow-up. |
This. You don't apply to one job and wait and see if you get it before moving on to apply for a second job. You cast your net WIDE. |
