Car line drop off: Why does your kid need to be dropped off right in front of the door?

Anonymous
Like many schools, there is a huge line every morning for drop off at my kid's school. The school has placed cones and signs to create a "drop off zone" along the sidewalk in front of the school, so the idea is, as your pull up and your car is within the zone, your kid is to get out of the car there. The zone is pretty big, probably enough to accommodate 10-12 cars.
Yet there are always parents that instead of pulling all the way up to the front of the zone, stop right in front of the door and let their kid out there. This holds up the line a lot-if every parent was to do that it would literally take 10+X longer to get through the HUGE amount of cars.
Why do parents do this? Do they really think their kid is incapable of walking the extra 20 feet? FWIW, this is high school. I'm not talking about really little kids here.

I've noticed this too, and it's irritating. They have staff out there, and it would be nice if they let 20 cars into the drop-off zone, and they all MUST let their snowflake out, then everyone leaves. NEXT!

Bad design of the school's part. At our school the entrance is at the head of the drop-off zone, so everybody is incentivized to drive all the way up if they want to minimize their kid's distance.

Plus the principal stands there and greets each car. Last year, it was the principal together with the armed school resource officer. (How bizarre is this? America 2022/23.)

Entitlement. Heaven forbid precious walk just a bit.

The worst is the parents who get out of the car with their children and to get backpacks out of the trunk. These people suck!!!!

Drives me absolutely batty.
Our school has teachers out front who spend their whole time just waving their hands forward to try and get people to pull up. Some do, some don't.

It's possible that not all parents understand what the procedure is. I avoid car drop off like the plague, so only do it very occasionally when weather is bad or we are running very late. I find it super confusing. I try to follow signs and whatever the clear procedure is, but if the two cars in front of me do something, I usually do the same thing because I figure they know better than me. Which means if they do the wrong, annoying thing (I might realize it's annoying, I don't know) then I do that thing to.

The reason I avoid car drop off is that at every school we've been at, it's been poorly organized and confusing, with bad signage and unclear procedures. The drop-off lanes are never well designed and traffic is always horrible and everyone gets impatient and stressed. Every school. So we walk/bike/drop off in a nearby parking lot and let them walk/whatever it takes to get them to school without having to go sit in that drop off lane.

I mean…if their car is too small to have stuff in the back seat, what else are they supposed to do? I’ve noticed people doing this at our school, and the parents who get out and help are moving along a lot faster than the cars where the kids get the backpacks out of the trunk themselves.

WTF are you talking about. If a child can fit in the back seat, then their bag can fit back there as well. If you need to get stuff out of the trunk, then you should park and walk your kid up to the door.

Beats me. As soon as I’ve turned into the parking lot, I tell my kid to remove her seatbelt and gather her things. I pull up as far as I can and tell her to have a good day. She’s expected to exit the car as soon as I come to a stop along the curb.

There was a hilarious viral video of a mom eviscerating parents who do this (in a funny way).

My kid is on crutches, so I am letting him off as close as possible. Once he is off the crutches, he will resume taking the bus.

The people I see are in compact cars and their kids have huge backpacks and those huge binders. I can see where that wouldn’t all fit in the backseat.

I avoid drop off line because my kid can't unbuckle seatbelt by himself in carseat. We have purchased the gadget ro make it easier, and it does not work.We enroll kid at onsite before care even though it is not necessary.

How huge is your car that you can't reach back and unbuckle it?
