I know there are 4,000. But how many are there that anyone UMC who attended college themselves would want their kids to attend?
I wouldn't exclude schools that "nobody's heard of" because I really like the high quality selective SLACs and would gladly send a kid there. But it seems like there are tons of small bible colleges and a million regional state schools that would just be odd for a student from the DMV to attend as an OOS student. Then once you throw out all the for-profit schools and community colleges, how many are left? |
The Princeton Review includes somewhere between 350-400 schools they consider high quality. |
|
There are 3000+ 4 year colleges.
|
This. And Fiske is similar with about 320 schools. Any of those can potentially provide a quality education for a student willing to put in the work |
How many are regionally accredited? |
There are roughly 4,000 accredited colleges/universities in the USA. |
How many are regionally accredited? |
Cool. To most parents, that number is meaningless. No parent in this area is considering Philander Smith University for their kid, along with 3,750 of those 4,000 |
And yet that school is open and teaching students, so... |
Colleges in general are regionally accredited. I think you mean are categorized as regional rather than national institutions. USNWR I think lists around 300 or so national institutions. And "regional" doesn't necessarily mean low quality--for instance up until the last year or two James Madison University was categorized as a regional university (it's been recently recharacterized as national). Towson is also considered a regional school in this area. Plenty of parents rightly consider these excellent options. |
Editing--300 or so national universities and a similar number of national liberal arts colleges--so it's more like 600-700. Not sure exactly, but at least around there. |
| There are 358 NCAA Division I basketball teams. Turn on the television on Saturday mornings to see a list, with scores. Yes, Swarthmore and Carnegie Mellon are Division III. But Gardner Webb is Division I, and is more obscure academically. So, 358 is a starting point. |

"And yet that school is open and teaching students, so...'
It's like you didn't read the OP. |
I’m curious how Fiske chooses which schools to leave out. I couldn’t find VCU, but it makes USNWR’s list. |
There is somebody that likes to post lists and what not from the lesshighschool stress website. I believe even that website indicates that there are essentially 250-300 colleges worth attending...many of which accept 80%+ of their applicants (hence, don't stress about attending one of these colleges). CCs where you can learn a trade for little cost, or where you get auto-admission into schools in the 250-300 list after 2 years would also be considered good options...assuming you are using CC for the right reasons. |
