UVA no longer deferring early apps

Anonymous
According to the UVA website, if you apply early decision or early action, the decision will be admit, deny, or waitlist. If you are waitlisted the app is not considered again in RD. It is just part of the waitlist pool that they may look at if there is room after May 1.

Great idea! That’s less suffering and ambiguity for students.

One would hope they could figure this out by the time "Early" Action decisions are released in... February LOL.

My oldest son (HS class of 2020) was one of the few who got in in the RD round after being deferred from EA. My younger son was also deferred, and then waitlisted.

I think the new system is better.

Yield protection. Also, looks like few are jumping on the UVA-Wise option if waitlisted.

How is this yield protection?

It’s a standard response on DCUM. Almost reflexive, really.

UNC does this, too.

I think it’s a good idea. UVA was taking so few kids who were deferred but it was giving them false hope.

My DD is applying ED and it seems much better to get a real decision in December.

they went to WL last year and we know several people so this makes no sense.

What do you mean? They will waitlist now but won’t defer to regular decision.

Oh,good, because the response makes no sense

I think this is the opposite of yield protection. Can you explain your thinking?

with a 60% in-state yield rate, not sure why UVA needs yield protection. The oos yield rate is traditionally low due to ridiculously expensive tuition, now over 80K.

It has nothing to do with yield. I imagine it’s because they were rarely admitting students who were deferred. It’s easier for both the admissions offices as well as the applicants.
