How's your school year going?

I have two SN kids. Both with ADHD and dyslexia and my girl has missed two days of school due to anxiety and my boy has had two notes from teachers on behavior so far. I hate this.

Oof. That's awful. I'm so sorry.

Things are going okay. Kids are in ninth and sixth, so big transition years. Lots of missed assignments and teachers not doing 504 stuff but it has been better than in years past.

What does your DD's therapist say about missing school due to anxiety? Mine said I couldn't let that happen and so on those days DD went to the counselor's office instead of class.

Multiple phone calls acting like they were suprised about behaviors and that I should do some about it. Hello - he has a lengthy BIP there in your system that I also told you about!! So annoying. On the positive side once they paid attention it got better.

My preschooler only started two days ago. My anxiety is high. Hoping for the best for him 🩵

Still waiting for the other shoe to drop, over here. I have everything crossed. The only issue we’ve had so far is that DC qualifies for pull-out services twice per week, and he is all sorts of annoyed because he’s missing either class or lunch with his friends. We’ll see….

changing schools is kind of a mess. They don't honor the IEP for the first month, and they don't have any reading specialist for her upper elementary grade to do what she needs anyway.

But her behavior has been okay even though she didn't want to make the switch, and one teacher already offered to help her with homework on her own time after school, which is AMAZING.

Absolute sh!tshiw. Transition to HS has been full of gravitation to the least common denominator as far as behavior/“friends” go and we still do not have a good handle on what has been assigned for what class.

Still waiting for assistive tech accommodations that were in place in middle school since day 1.

OP probably didn't "let" it happen. If you haven't dealt with a kid who refuses school then show a little humility.

My AuDHD kid hates school but has been going everyday so far. Today he couldn't even get out of bed.

Going better than I expected so far. There hasn’t been much homework assigned, and I’m pretty sure that’s when his stress test will kick in.

Going pretty well for my 6th grade DS ASD/ADHD. Last year was extremely difficult for the first two months. His magnet school uses 5th grade as a weird "college prepping" point, and the shift from having homework once or twice a week in 4th grade to having 15 homework things to track at any given time.... it was so stressful. Add to that that we'd started an anti-anxiety during the summer, and we only found out after a few weeks of school that it was activating him (he was saying and doing extremely silly, inappropriate, things that got several calls home). The year did even out though.

6th grade has been good - far less homework requirements than last year. He also got in the advanced math class (two years ahead) and his old math teacher thought he was brilliant but likely to struggle in this setting because of disorganization... math started rough (25% on the first pop quiz) but turned it around and is doing very well.

I told him this year i'd give him a month to figure out his 6 classes' expectations, where i would be tracking but not getting angry about missed assignments. And there hvae definitely been missed assignments but i'm sticking to my word. I'll worry about grades second semester.

So this is one of the better years for us. fwiw, other years have been so bad he's had to withdraw from school. Last year, at his year end 504 meeting, the principal said he's super proud of DH and thinks he's complete on track for success in MS, though if we'd asked principal earlier in the year, he would never have said that. Thanks, i guess? But that just puts into perspective how rough it's been in the past.

Well but only because we are at a non-public where we've been for several years.

Started high school with two team taught classes and two honors classes. Seems like the honors teachers don’t feel like they have to follow the IEP- one even said “honors doesn’t deal with special Ed kids…” so it is just a normal start at FCPS.

I hate them more and more each year.

Which one if you don’t mind sharing?

Horribly...DS who has ADHD/ASD has not attended a single day of class and we have been approved for In home and Inhospitol Services. He refused to go since Memorial Day last school year. I don't know how we are going to cope with this year or whether he is going to learn anything.

It’s been a roller coaster for my 10th grader. It start off decent and fell apart this week. DS has regressed to refusing to go or do anything. The fear is 1-2 days will snowball. The assignments are starting to pile and he’s getting angry and argumentative and refusing his ADHD medication, which then makes everything worse. The last three weeks have been good. This week has been bad. I’m trying to not be discouraged and spiral myself.

We had a very bad year last year that ended up ending better than it started. The transition to HS was rough and we just want to keep him safe and preserve some sanity for the rest of us.
