Scattergram data

Hey MCPS folks, how does the scattergram data relate to the bar graphs in Naviance for admissions? I am completely confused. Do the Scattergrams go back more than 10 years or something? Some of the GPA/test scores seem low for the last few years, and there are far more acceptances on the Scattergram than in the bar graph. Any insights welcome. Thanks!

For our HS, it goes back five years (2018 still up though - hasn’t rolled over to this year). In the bar graph by year, they won’t show unless at least there are at least three kids in a category but they seem to include in the scatterplot. Hope that helps.

Depends on the high school. Often it isn't clear how far back the scattergram data goes.

Any data that includes pre 2021 cycles is useless.

+1 Ask the high school to explain.

Does your school not show the bar graphs by year? Which MCPS school?

Completely inaccurate since shows data before test optional

It shows the bar graphs by year, and those go back to 2018, but if you add all those acceptances (for highly selective schools) up, there are far fewer than what I see on the scatterplot. Conversely, there are far more rejections on the bar graph than on the scatterplot. I am wondering if they included some older acceptances and to kind of fill out the plot and pared rejections to keep it legible? It just doesn't add up. And, I know that pre '21 data isn't very helpful, but pre '17 data is really useless!

Our MCPS Scattergrams allows you to toggle between two different graphs -- one showing ACT scores and the other for SAT scores. So you'd have to look at both of those graphs and aggregate them to get what's in the bar graphs (and then that would only work if there was no overlap between SAT and ACT takers). Plus, they mentioned that this year's scattergrams would somehow include kids applying test optional, but I don't know if that happened or how it would be reflected. The bottom line: ask your college advisory office if they can tell you how the various parts of scattergrams interact.

Our school seems to be adding a way to look at test optional data

If there are fewer than three acceptances, they aren’t shown on bar graph - only in scatterplot.

Our school uses SCOIR. In Scoir you can select the years you want to see.

I looked at just last year's acceptances and then I backed out a few more years.

I feel so much has changed historical data is pretty much irrelevant. You just want the last 2-3 years MAX.

Yes, and allotting for both sat and act toggles, it's significantly more than the bar graph acceptances totaled. Very weird.

I sent an email to college advisor Wed and not heard back yet. Will follow up Monday.

They show for our school, though I'm not sure how accurate it all is. Some years are 1, some 0, some 2 (it's a highly selective school with 10-20 apps per year). The reason I know some data can't be accurate is that it has 1 kid accepted but not enrolling for one year, and I know at least 1 kid was accepted and enrolled that year. Maybe the apps and acceptances automatically enter, but kids have to update where they enroll?

Anyway, regardless, that doesn't impact the fact that bar graph acceptances are over represented on the scatterplot, and rejections are under represented. Either some of the bar graph apps are acceptances and somehow only show on scatterplot, or the scatterplot is filtering in some older acceptances to have more acceptance data to graph. Unless someone else knows better out there!

Maybe I will get some clarity from counselor next week.

Also, I tried the test option checkbox, and that grayed everything out. And some of the SAT scores would have to have been TO if last few years, so that was weird too.
