My kids really like ham, but I worry about the processed element.
If I wanted to make something to substitute, what's the healthiest choice? Tofu ham like this: https://itdoesnttastelikechicken.com/brown-sugar-mustard-glazed-tofu/ Turkey ham? Fresh ham that I cook? Uncured ham? |
| Jamon serrano ๐๐๐ณ |
| Iโd grill pork loin, slice, and use in sandwiches. |
No, that's what I'll eat after I send them off to school with their tofu "ham". |
| Any without nitrites or nitrates. |
|
I donโt think most of her things posted are a real substitute for ham.
Best bet is probably nitrate free haM. I think applegate farm sells one. It is high sodium but adjust other food items accordingly. |

The thing thatโs most concerning in preserved meat is salt. Salt has serious health consequences, but nobody everybody ignores it and focuses on the exotic additives that are actually only present in trace amounts and have much less clinical evidence of harm.
So, whatever ham has the least sodium is where I would start. |
Lol, this is funny on multiple levels
|
I mean, this is disinformation. |
| All hams are going to be full of salt, you just have to limit your portion sizes. Canadian style bacons are great. Very good source of protein that's low fat and and calorie. You can buy brands that cut the ham into reasonable sizes so the salt in take isn't too bad. |
| I like "off the bone" at the deli. I'm sure it's not the best choice but whatever. |
| Try Canadian bacon. If you're going to send the kids to school with ham, at least use the real thing. |
You seem like you really know what's up. What lunches do you send with the kids? |

The one that's still running around, going "oink"!
OK, OK. I love ham. Off the bone pork ham is the best. The key is everything in moderation. "Nitrate-free" often has naturally-occurring nitrates, which is marginally but not hugely better than nitrate additives. Some "nitrate-free" meats are actually nitrate-free, but they're very rare. I agree that it's best to not habituate your child's palate to overly salty or sweet foods - sets them up for a lifetime of struggle. |
| Besides making substitutions for ham, you could make them club sandwiches with a combo of ham and oven roasted turkey breast. That way theyโd get some ham flavor, but less salt than a sandwich full of nothing but ham. |
