Sort of a s/o of the Davidson thread but between the winters and the competitive vibe and the characteristic hostility and crabbiness of folks from Philly to Maine, it feels like the odds of a student being unhappy or the campus culture being divided/lame are higher in this region. |
odd post |
Bless your heart. |
+1 Try again. |
OP- I’m serious. Kids seem happier in other regions. I wonder if mental health data supports this thesis |
I got my kid OUT off of the East Coast. Specifically, have had enough of DC rudeness, unfriendly and spoiled kids, competitiveness out the wazoo at her Montgomery County "W" school.
She is much happier at a midwestern school. Different vibe. |
I know it's not scientific, but I have definitely seen this among my son's friends. Those that chose schools in the west and the south are happier than those that attend in the east and mid-west. There's definitely something to be said for decent weather. |
Hmm I went to a northeastern LAC and it was super fun, loved it. So no... obviously some people want sunshine and others don't care. I loved the fact that it snowed all the time, and it was cold, and out in the middle of nowhere because it created a real community. But that's just me. |
Do people post things like just for giggles? Obviously, everything is not for everybody. People are different. People like different things. Why is that such a hard concept for people to understand? I personally would be miserable in the deep south or the mid-west but I realize that there are people who thrive in those in places and I fully support them doing what they need to do to be happy. |
Honestly, hoping my kid does the same. |
Back in the 90s, my dad preached this heartily. Get out of the Northeast, the stress here is toxic, etc. Maybe he was right? I went to an ivy, then lived in NYC, the Bay Area, Chicago, Boston and now DC. Vibes all well within a single standard deviation. Are there places where strivers don't stress? |
This group is CONSUMED by weather. I wonder if you understand that a snowstorm in the NE doesn’t cripple the college or community. News flash, we have snow plows and salt trucks. Yes it gets cold, buy a coat. What is the deal? |
I think kids who go far away are happier. But maybe they're kids with an appetite for adventure to begin with |

Ehh, I went to the University of Chicago, a famously unfun college in a famously cold city, and I wasn't miserable or even particularly stressed. I found other people like that. We did our work, went to class, and then hung out and had fun. It was cold, so we wore heavier coats than someone in Florida, but we had plenty of fun. |
