People watching their phones with volume on full

Anonymous
I am waiting for someone in IAD arrivals area and there are people watching shows or tiktok on their phones with the volume on full.

What is wrong with these people. Why do they think we want to hear this? Can someone please explain?

They don't think you want to hear it. They don't think about you AT ALL. They are completely self-engrossed in what they want and they don't notice other people or care what they think. We have become a nation of self-centered individuals, most of whom only think about themselves and don't think about anyone else.

I take the commuter train from Frederick to DC three times a week and this is my biggest source of frustration by far. People are so damn inconsiderate!! If it goes on for longer than 3 minutes I have no problem telling them to put it away or put some headphones on.

Today it was a lady across from me in physical therapy, getting her heat and STEM treatment while watching her phone on full volume. Clueless.

I find it absolutely infuriating. But there are a lot of rude people in the world who literally don't get that other people exist, so ... it's gonna happen.

This, above.

And sadly, if you try to ask politely that they turn down the volume, you possibly risk a confrontation or much worse. The days are gone when you could have pointed out, "I'm sorry, would you mind turning down the volume?" and they would have been sheepish and realized they were a nuisance, and would have turned it down. Try that now and you're risking who knows what response.

Got to say, that's one situation where I'd quietly ask a staff member to ask her to turn it down. Different from this happening on the metro or in a place like an airport (OP's situation). It's a place of business providing services and one customer is being obnoxious and clueless in a way that affects other customers' experience. I'd even think that the noise would tense people up -- and that can't be good, when people are getting PT.

It’s always either toddlers or Boomers. So annoying.

This is a case that needs complaining. Tell the PT that the phone noise is making you tense and could she please use ear buds.

Toddlers or their mothers? Who’s making the decisions here. And I’ve never seen an older person blasting their phone for any reason.

Makes me crazy - full blown conversations on speakerphone in the grocery store, watching on an airplane, use your earbuds/headphones!

Oh, I have (new poster here). In fact I just spent 3 days traveling and this happened constantly, with both the toddler and boomer crowd. One older guy in the airport was watching some show that was definitely NSFW— everyone within 4 gates could hear. So obnoxious.

Well, at least you know he wasn't armed, and you could tell him to shut it off without fearing for your life.
