Elite Swimming

We are getting ready to move to the DC area. My 14 year old is an elite swimmer. He practices 7 times a week and has dryland 3-4 times. What is a good club to join? We also have a 9 year old who swims 4x a week year round. She would need to be with the same club.

The club closest to your house.

There should be an appropriate club close to your new house. If he's got AAA/AAAA times, I'm sure a club could make room even though you're quite late in the game, so long as his sister also is decent. Find the nearest pool, find the clubs that practice there and start calling...

Where in the DC area are you moving?

We're with a very good program, but I don't think they let 9 yos practice 4 days a day week. That's not considered developmentally appropriate.

He has futures times and close to winter juniors. We would move near the best pool. Just wondering where that is.

It is what she does here. Just looking for something comparable. She did 4x last year as an 8 year old too. Seems common around here.

How many hours total is your 9 year old swimming per week?

She does 3x for an hour and the fourth is an hour and a half.

There are dozens of pools across two states and DC proper that make up the metro area. You underestimate commutes at your peril! Pick the neighborhood first, then find the pool.

If your child is really as serious as you say, then you should be able to ask your current coaches for a recommendation. The "best" club for one kid isn't always the best for another.

You can also use the USA Swimming website to lookup club rankings and go from there. Reach out to the coaches, see if you can get an evaluation and go from there.

I asked our current coaches and have recommendations but they’re for general programs and not specific pools. NCAP and RMSC both have several sites. Didn’t know if one was better than another. Just thought I’d ask here too.

We work remotely. Commute doesn’t matter.

You could check where Katie Ledecky trained.

Which would be NCAP at the Georgetown Prep location.
