What Do MCPS high schoolers bring each day?

Anonymous
New to the area. I have a daughter going to Wootton and we have no idea what the students bring to school. Are bringing lunches cool? Do they bring backpacks and notebooks or use the large binders instead. Do they use and decorate their lockers in this area. Her middle school in another state, no one used or decorated their lockers and she just used one of those huge softball binders. She was hoping to actually want to use and decorate her locker. Do the kids bring their own laptops to school?

Thanks for any help!

School issued Chromebooks. Sports gear. Coffee. And no to using and/or decorating lockers.

Definitely no to lockers. At my kids school you have to request one. They do not even assign them anymore.

school provides computer, lockers no (though they are issued or can be requested if desired), wear what you want, binders or subject notebooks, soft binder no(that’s for MS), backpacks yes, lunches are fine(some schools can go off campus). Find the quickest way to class(not necessarily the shortest), join a club/activity(HS are big, 2000+kids).

Most kids have backpacks, chromebooks, lunch, personal items, cell phone. Some carry sports gear around all day.

HS teacher here. Above is accurate. It depends on the school, but for most - bring a personal lock for a locker. While your kid may not use it much right now, it is a useful place to store sports gear, umbrella, raincoat/warmer jacket, etc. as the year goes on.

Mine brings lunch, primarily to avoid the cafeteria. Most MCPS HS can’t come anywhere close to fitting all the kids into their cafeterias, so trying to get in and buy lunch and still have time to eat it is a struggle. And it’s so loud and crowded, it’s not much of a break.

As a PP said, some have open lunch (not sure about Wootton), but even those who don’t generally let kids grab a spot in whatever hallway or classroom they can find, or eat outside.

Someone who’s actually at Wootton will be able to tell you more about lockers and sports gear, but it’s safe to assume she may not get a locker, and even if she does, she probably won’t be able to get to it very often during the school day. Plan to carry everything around, at least at first, until she’s got the lay of the land.

Kids can technically carry their own laptop, but it’s easier and safer to use the school-issued ones. Nobody bothering to steal a school chromebook, and it’s simpler to manage the accounts and passwords and the requirements for online testing. Mine quickly realized she wasn’t using any of the actual software or features on her Apple laptop because everything was done in the Google environment anyway. And when her middle school chromebook crapped out, they gave her an updated version with a touchscreen that was even slimmer than her MacBook Air.

Welcome to the Wootton community! I have a sophomore and 2 grads. Most kids forgo lockers. My kids just brought a backpack, Chromebook, folders, spiral notebooks (they didn’t want binders) and their school issued Chromebook. They also brought a water bottle and tended to lunch on granola bars or fruit (didn’t carry a lunch bag). The cafeteria gets crowded so lines are long to buy lunch but they occasionally bought.

I should have added Wootton does not have open lunch. Kids aren’t supposed to leave campus. And for those above who mentioned sports gear, most kids will find a teacher’s classroom to leave their sports gear in for the day. My understanding is most student athletes are not given space in the locker room. I think the exception is football.

Do kids bring a backpack and sports bag? And carry all day? And are they responsible for bringing their own notebooks? One for each subject? Thanks in advance for all the tips! Also bringing new kid (boy) from out of MCSP to Wootton!

I am honestly floored the kids do not have lockers or open lunch. Carrying around all their crap all day. Never being able to leave and get fresh air and normal food. That sounds terrible.

Kids are offered lockers. I begged my kids to take one and all refused stating they are inconvenient.

My Wootton athlete carries 2 bags when he has practice right after school. Last year that was very rare.

Yes, kids are responsible for bringing their own notebooks. Mine likes one spiral for each subject but all kids are different. There’s no right or wrong.

my kid said it's too far from any of their classes to use during school time, but my kid does use the gym lockers to put their valuables in (phone), and regular lockers for stuff they need for after school activities.

At most high schools without open lunch kids can go outside, just not off campus.
