My kid is in a travel sport until this weekend. We had a beach trip planned Aug 5-12th and just found out my daughter can't play a Fall sport because an email just came out that tryouts start Aug 9th. 3 weeks before school starts? That isn't even allowed in NJ. Super bummed. She is a top club player too, but she will just stick with club and travel sports. I wish they notified us sooner, but we wouldn't have changed the vacation anyway. She needs the break.
How do kids that play summer sports, go to camps, are camp counselors, have jobs, etc... start that early? Tryouts and Practices are 12-2pm each day until school starts. I work and can't her to them anyway. It just isn't feasible unless you are rich and your kids don't do anything all summer. |
I would reach out to the coach and explain. Worst case scenario, they say she can't try out which is what you are planning for either way. Then send the ADs and MCPS your feedback about the early start dates. Change only happens when someone tries to make the change. |
| We aren't in NJ and many announced it in the spring and you didn't pay attention. Most summer sports are over now, like swim. |
| Fairfax County tryouts start this Monday, July 31. It sucks. Not sure what NJ has to do with anything. |
| Agree about reaching out to the coach. They may say it’s ok. Worth a try! |

Also, not defending the early tryouts but you don’t have to be rich to a tryout and play a fall sport. There are a lot of diverse schools in the area where kids of all backgrounds make it to fall sports practice everyday.
Kids plan their summers around tryout dates; it’s not that they’re not doing anything, they’re just planning ahead. Stop putting other kids down because the schedule didn’t work for your kid. |
A lot of kids walk or bike or take the bus. |
It is your choice (or your kid's choice) to play a travel sport. You say your kid needs a break. Fair enough, but your kid needs a break because she has been playing travel sports. You're looking for something to be mad about, but you're being unreasonable. Get out of your bubble. At our lower-income school, the kids take the bus to practice (free public bus for students in MoCo) and the families love that this is an option for the month of August. Your travel sports playing kid will be fine. |
+1 million! |
| Poor little baby. |
| OP, if you are going to the beach for a week and you kid does travel sports, you can hire a driver for that week. Problem solved. You clearly have the money to do it. |

Let me guess: dc is rising 9th grader? Just enjoy your vacation. This was just your first rodeo (and likely last summer family vacation together)
Most MD schools have tryouts in this timeframe. Some rule change allows coaches access to their players in June do mine have been practicing with their teams all summer long. Really most of the team has been decided over the summer anyways. You’ll get it next year. |
Swim isn’t over. All stars is this weekend. |
+1 We had a meeting in June and were told to be considered the kids had to attend a minimum of 6 summer practices. In addition, it was highly suggested that everyone attend the same camp. It really surprised me when my child was an incoming freshman, but at this point (incoming senior) you just know and work vacations around it. 6 day a week practices start on the 9th and won't end until the end of the season. High school sports are brutal. |
| The state of Maryland sets the dates HS sports can start practicing 3 years out. It's on you for not finding this out when you have an athletic kid |
