What to do for fun when it is SO damn hot??

I feel like this summer is zooming by but we are not doing many fun things as a family because it is SO damn hot.

Have others found ways to still enjoy the summer?

It really is quite depressing. I've mostly stayed inside (especially on the bad air quality days) but it feels like the world is burning and it's unsustainable. Outdoor workers are dying. I'm lucky to have aircon and a pool.

As a family though (just to give you a more helpful response) our summer has been punctuated by theater shows. Kids are both into theatre so we have shows to look forward to and remember fondly FWIW.

+1. I was never a beach or pool person in New England, but with kids in the DMV it's the best option.

If you’re not pool members or your HOA/condo doesn’t have one, there is a nice free splash pad in Alexandria at the Franconia district park. And a few smaller ones here and there too, I think Fairfax City has one. But yes - pool is the #1 option haha.

Udvar-Hazy museum and the other museums in DC.

Museum of the US Army is free and interesting if your kids are into history. The building is brand new and nice.

I got my kids a summer membership to the trampoline park for just this reason. It pays for itself in like 5 visits I think? And we go at least once a week.

Sometimes we go walk around the mall - my kids are 4 and 8 and actually love it. It’s an interesting outing for kids if they aren’t dragged to the mall for shopping all the time like we were as kids!

Go outside first thing in the morning and then after dinner when it’s not quite as hot/humid. If they want to go to a playground mid-day or whatever there are some that are shaded, either by a tent or by trees, so they don’t get as hot.

We spend our summers at the pool or in museums.

I HATE MOSQUITOES AND HUMID HEAT.

+1 splash pads for young kids. DC has a bunch of nice ones.

Pool. Hikes at 7 am. Indoor playdates with kids. Art projects. Movie nights etc.

Cabin John playground in Maryland (but close to DC/VA) is pretty shaded.

We are finding rivers and creeks to visit and cool off in with bands of friends. So much fun!

Same. Always see all these great lists of summer outdoor events but it is really just so hot and unpleasant and my kids just don't do well with heat at all. They love being outdoors, hiking playing etc but not at all when it's so hot.

Nothing besides the extreme heat, 90% humidity, bad allergies, horrible unhealthy air quality due to the fire smoke and torrential rains and thunderstorms going outside is nearly impossible these days.
