Rep. Jamie B. Raskin (Md.), the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, will not enter the U.S. Senate race to fill the seat of retiring Sen. Ben Cardin (D), a decision with huge implications for the race. Raskin, 60, who has been a member of the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol and as the lead manager of former president Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial, announced the decision Friday after months of speculation about his political future. “So where can I best serve in this momentous nationwide struggle to defend constitutional democracy and national progress? This is the question I have faced as I consider how best to advance the interests and values of our beloved Maryland while working to safeguard our future as a democratic nation,” Raskin wrote in a more than 1,000-word statement released Friday night. “At this moment, I believe the best way for me to make the greatest difference in American politics in 2024 and beyond is this: to run for reelection to the House of Representatives in Maryland’s extraordinary 8th District.” Many observers say the four-term congressman would have brought national star power and a liberal record to the contest, boosting the primary election profile and offering a contrast to the Democratic candidates who have so far jumped into the race to fill the rare open seat. Vying for the seat are Prince George’s County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks, a former prosecutor and a two-term executive of one of the state’s most populous counties and Montgomery County council member Will Jawando, an attorney and author — both of whom would become the first Black person to represent Maryland in the U.S. Senate; and U.S. Rep. David Trone (D-Md.), a multimillionaire wine mogul elected to Congress in 2018 to represent Maryland’s 6th Congressional District. |
| So now it’s between Alsobrooks, Jawando and Trone. |
| He's still dealing with chemo and cancer treatments |
|
Smart guy. I wouldn’t give up that safe blue seat either.
Plus, house members are better people to work with than senators. I’d rather be in the house. Nicer group of people. |
|
Not sure his health can withstand a Senate run. He’s got a good job right now that allows him to manage his cancer diagnosis, plus spend time with family.
I think this was more about his health, potentially needing to do more chemo. |
And his son’s death. |
Ugh. I bet Alsobrooks is missed at Jawando for running. I don’t think he has a snowballs chance but he will pull some votes from her. |
The House is full of crazies. |
Ugh I didn’t realize that Jawando had actually declared. |
+1 to the first - I was surprised when Schiff started running for Senate and I would have been even more surprised if Raskin did too. They both have a lot of power and seniority in the House and safe seats. About the second, man there are a lot of crazies in the House. |
Oh wow. I wish him a speedy recovery. |
Yeah he is smart for that, but I know many hoped he would run. I think Alsobrooks is the best candidate. |
Yes, he’s been through so much. I pray he fully recovers. |
Yes that was so devastating. |
I really don’t know why he’s running. Honestly, he tried to brand himself as a baby Obama, but it’s not working out. Alsobrooks has a proven track record. |
