WWYD: nail tech cut my toe

Anonymous
Last Friday I went to my regular nail salon. I got a nail tech who I had never had before, although I see her there all the time. I have a raised mole on one of my toes and she cut part of it along with nearby skin while she was looking away instead of paying attention to what she was supposed to be cutting (nails/cuticles). It hurt a lot and bled for the rest of the pedicure. After we finished the pedi I moved over to the mani area and she worked on my fingernails for about 10 minutes, then when I came back from washing my hands, she started doing something with my toes. I figured she was checking the polish but looked down and there was quite a bit of blood on my shoe (this was at least 45 mins after the cut, just to show how much it was bleeding).

She was apologetic, but I was surprised when I was still charged full price. Then, last night one of my fingernails chipped -- just 2 days after a gel manicure. I have a big scab on my toe, a chipped fingernail, and overall my nails just don't look that great. Normally I'm a big fan of letting it go but I'm really bothered by all this.

I'm hesitant to say anything because 1) I don't want to get someone in trouble and 2) I go there all the time. But I feel like the situation was handled very poorly and I'm not even sure if she disinfected the cut.

WWYD? (And yes, I am a pushover in certain situations.)

I hope you went home and immediately applied Neosporin. Anyhow this is becoming more common place. These people are rushing through your manis and pedis to get the next person into the chair. Blame COVID, and inflation.

here's how you handle it - you report it to the manager or owner, and you demand they redo your manicure. And make sure to show them the condition of your toe. If you messed up like this at your job would you not expect to be called out on it? What's the difference, I need to know.

Why would you chipping a nail be their fault?

1.) Go someplace else, this place doesn't know what they are doing.

2.) Get some real problems.

You could do a Telehealth call and request an antibiotic, just in case. I would be really worried if there was that much blood.

You should call the manager And, next time, go elsewhere if you don't want the awkward encounter of having to avoid this tech.

Also - were your shoes ruined?

Hopefully, lesson learned:
Stay away from those quickie bargain places.

You should have addressed it on the spot. I wouldn’t go back.

DP: I once went to a salon that is not a "quickie bargain place" - was cut by cuticle cutters, and their nail file cut my skin....and my nails started chipping after one day.

OP here -- I have been frequenting this salon for years, and it's not a quickie/budget type of place.

Gel polish doesn't chip for quite a while (weeks) if it's applied properly.

Op tell the manager what happened.

I went to a very fancy NW DC nail place that advertises as non-toxic, and during the pedicure the nail tech made my foot bleed twice -- once she clipped my toe, another time she used the pumice stone so rough on the kin of my ankle it started bleeding.

She did not even notice and I had to draw her attention to it and ask for a bandaid.

I was pretty taken aback, she seemed not to care at all. I didn't see the point in talking to management. I would never want to go back even if they offered me a free service.

Now I go to the typical nail salon that's less fancy and I haven't had a problem. knock wood.

OP here - any recommendations for a quality nail salon in Alexandria?

No, I was wearing shoes that were non-absorbent/easy to wipe clean. And I didn't realize how bad it was until I saw the blood on my shoe.

Here's what I do FWIW, as I only get pedicures once a year.
I do my own cutting. I tell them not to cut anything. I guess it's a polish change?

Since I'm only doing this once a year I'm really good at cutting my own nails and I prefer them short.

I pick a color I have at home, or remember the name then buy the color. That way I can fix any chips myself.
