Republicans vote to fine a member of Congress

Anonymous
Almost every Republican in the House voted to assess a $16 million dollar fine on Adam Schiff for his part of the Russia hoax.

With this precedent in place that you can issue large fines against a member of Congress because you don't like what they said, even if it didn't get a majority vote and technically they voted to send it to a committee to investigate, how might Democrats use this when they have control of the House?

The dems will not use it. You know moderates want to reach across the aisle to the people who stormed the Capitol and wanted to kill they.

They should have just stuck to a censure. His comments over the past few years have deserved a censure.

If you think HIS comments deserve a censure, how do you feel about MTG, Boobert, and all the other Rep crazies?

not only that.. but they would fine a person for what they said, but have no problems with a real criminal (Santos) in their midst.

I guess Rs think unethical comments are worse than criminal behavior.

So if his words deserve a censure, what do you think the House and Senate members deserve to foment a coup?

It wasn't that they "didn't like what he said" - he LIED. He misled the public.

Yeah, so? Republican members of Congress lie and mislead the public all the time. How many million should we fine them?

20 Republicans, including Thomas Massie, voted with the Democrats to table that stupid bill. I suspect some of them were smart enough to realize that if this vote succeeded and Schiff were censured, expelled from Congress, or fined $16 million that the Democrats would weaponize it against every Republican who lied (and that's most of them).

Even Thomas Massey voted against this because it blatantly violates the Speech & Debate Clause of the Constitution

And once again, regarding that "Russia Hoax" business - it's astounding how the right wing even now keeps pretending "it was all fake" and "there was nothing"

McCarthy is such a worthless idiot. The debt ceiling deal showed that 2/3 of House Republicans and 3/4 of House Democrats are willing to work together to govern responsibly, but since then all McCarthy has done is pander to the idiot 1/3 of House Republicans who think the only purpose of Congress is to pass dumbass resolutions complaining about imaginary grievances.
