I think this is amazing. We should definitely be protecting parents from persecution in other states for getting their children healthcare. |
| Good for them. Every state should be a safe state. |
Agreed. These are decisions to be made by children, parents, and health care providers. |

JAMA defines it as:
"Gender-affirming primary care includes preventive care, mental health and substance use disorder screening, hormone therapy, and education about nonmedical/nonsurgical gender-affirming interventions." Families absolutely must have access to this. Anyone who has had any kind of ongoing health issue, including mental health, knows it is a process. It's not like someone goes to the doctor and bam, they are scheduled for gender affirming surgery next week. And I say that as someone who likely would never consent to this type of surgery for my children while they are minors. I am adamantly opposed to it in concept. But I also recognize I am not a medical or mental health professional. Give people access to knowledge/expertise/care. Let them make the best decision for their family, in their own unique circumstances. If we claim to be a nation that loves freedom, I don't know why we work so hard to take it away from each other. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2805345#:~:text=Gender%2Daffirming%20primary%20care%20includes,%2Fnonsurgical%20gender%2Daffirming%20interventions. |
| I love living in Maryland. |
| Every legislator who voted for this has my loyalty for life. |
| As the parent of a trans young adult, I am so so upset by people posting when they have no idea what they are talking about. First no one is doing any surgeries on minors without parental involvement and consent. Second when we are talking about surgeries on teens we are almost always talking about top surgery. That surgery is very similar to breast reduction or implants and similar to plastic surgeries that we let teens get every day. It is impossible to get genital surgery done on a minor regardless of parental consent anywhere these surgeries are done. Most places want you to be in your 20s before they will schedule. I know because my child had surgery (successfully) after he was an adult. Please just let these families take care of their kids. |
| PP here with the trans young adult. Our family’s decisions about how to treat our child were not about politics or trends. We did research, did therapy, consulted medical experts and moved slowly. I will not judge another family who deals with a health issue and you should not judge unless you have been there. For my child transition has been life saving. No one is forcing you or your family to do anything you don’t agree with. (Although much like people’s views on abortion tend to change for their own daughter once you are living this situation your views often change). |
| Good for MD. |
Thanks for replying with this. Everyone should do what's right for their families and themselves. Unfortunately, some red states are persecuting people for doing what they believe is the best course of action and these families and people absolutely need protection in Maryland and other states like it. For me, the scariest part about this is that it's not even an election year. These types of issues are usually drummed up on the election year to try to increase voter turnout on the religious right. Will next year, being a Presidential election year, include even more aggressive bills? Over the next year, I'd expect to see an increase in the number of trans individuals in all the safe blue states. 8% of the US trans population has already moved and 43% are considering moving. I assume that the 40% that haven't considered moving includes mostly trans people already living in places like MD. 1,600,000 X .8 = 128,000 moved. 43% is another 688,000. This doesn't include nonbinary people, some of whom may not identify as trans. https://www.dataforprogress.org/blog/2023/6/8/lgbtq-adults-do-not-feel-safe-and-do-not-think-the-democratic-party-is-doing-enough-to-protect-their-rights

| Given that MD is losing population and struggling with anemic job growth, I guess it makes sense for it to be as welcoming as possible to as many different people as possible. |
| I think CA is already a safe state. It’s much easier than fighting crime and homelessness so I am sure there will be success in MD as well. |
| If only Maryland's social policies could bring it revenue. They don't. Of only lawmakers could also focus on doing their jobs. |
| Don’t the countries that are “reevaluating” medical intervention have socialized healthcare? So they just don’t want to pay for, there’s not actually heavy risk involved. |
Sorry, I was responding to something that’s gone now. Sorry! |
