I am 46, and have had hashimotos diagnosis for about 5 years. I’m about 10 lbs (currently 5’4” and 150) above what I was when initially diagnosed, and was a little more than I’d prefer at that point. Some of this is likely eating habits but some i think is age and hashimotos. I’d like to get down to 140 to fit into my clothes and feel better generally. I’m know Noom isn’t rocket science but I could use the motivation. Anyone have any experience they can share or something else to recommend? |
Is you Hashimotos well controlled with medication? If so, it shouldn't continue to cause symptoms. |
OP here. With hashimotos I feel like it’s hard to say. J feel mostly fine, but it’s been hard to lose some of these extra pounds…. |

I would investigate food intolerances and AIP diet or GF or DF before doing Noom, which is essentially a low-calorie diet. The key to testing for food intolerance is to continue to eat an appropriate amount of calories and not add useless and highly modified foods. Many tend to use elimination diets as a way to further restrict calories- that is not the cool for autoimmune issues. So if you go GF then just remove it don't try to replace it with GF products. Use starches like gf oats, rice, potatoes, etc. Same with DF. Although you may be able to work in goat or sheep milk items if you find that cows milk products are inflammatory for you. Also, with Hashimotos you want to avoid stressful HITT and lots of cardio. Frequent walking, walking uphill, etc are better. Heavier weights with longer rest periods. You can try 12-3-30 or some modification of that because for me, with short legs, 3mph is a realllllyyy fast walk. Add in 10-minute walks or dance or cleaning spurts after every meal. If you work from home, try a walking treadmill at a low pace for 10 min every 90 min. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep. Take appropriate rest days. Limit stress, which doesn't mean avoiding people or situations, just limit stress and take measures to heal/rest when stress is higher. My body will literally shut down when I have pushed it too far for too long. My DH is recovering from surgery and I have been solo on everything for the past 2.5 weeks including taking care of him since he is bedbound. I fell asleep cuddling with my kid two days ago (irritability was the first sign, random periods of sleep are the 2nd) and yesterday I had all the signs of a complete shutdown, which essentially means my body aches, my joints get swollen, and I just need copious amounts of sleep. When I wake up in the morning during these periods, my ankles don't work. They are rigid and it hurts to go to steps. I am learning these signs and took last night to go to bed early, read, do some meditation, and slept in. I do lift 3-4 a week and do 45 minute nightly walks with my dog. The walks will be reduced for a few days and I have to slow down my pace on lifting for the next few days. |
At 46 you might also want to check estrogen, etc. |

Just wondering if you are perimenopausal. I am using Noom, but don’t have hashimotos. For me it has been helpful to do the food journal and see how much I was eating at each meal. But there are other programs that are designed for women in this age range specifically that I think could be better. I’m just doing Noom bc it was free thru my insurance. |
I will get this checked. Thank you. It’s definitely possible. I did sign up for the Noom trial - it’s not anything earth shattering but in two days has helped me stay on track with not overeating. I don’t love that it doesn’t give you protein/fat/sugar like my fitness pal, but it’s “fine”. I felt like I needed a little more motivation this time so we’ll see how it goes for these two weeks and if I want to continue. |

I have Hashi’s and use Noom. Also perimenopausal at 50. It’s fine. Much better than it used to be. I like the motivational stuff some days. Others I ignore it. By default it has you eating back ~ 1/2 calories it thinks you’ve burned. Turn that off and it’s better, meaning I’ve actually lost a few lbs. over the past month. |
It’s ridiculous that such a “robust” and not brand new app doesn’t count protein/fat/sugar — or fiber! Most American diets lack fiber (mine included). I’ve been reading a lot about how varied plant fiber can improve gut microbiome and result in weight loss. But Noom can’t track it. I asked customer support and they suggested using a pen and paper until the app gets this feature, which apparently lots of people request. I’m going back to LoseIt. I like Nooms educational aspect but not tracking macros or fiber is a strange omission. |
Yes, I have had hashimotos for 15 years. As long as my thyroid levels are controlled with medication, I don't have any symptoms. |
Yes, I’m PP and I think the lack of food detail is what I don’t like. I feel like I get “penalized” if I eat SALMON! Bc yes, it’s fatty? But also one of “the best foods you should be eating”! So I really don’t love that baked salmon is “classified” with cookies and pizza as an orange food! |
It seems all my foods are green or orange so far 😂. But I’ve been able to stay within the calorie range….I do like that aspect of Noom (not one set target). |
