Weight lifting app

Anonymous
We just got a weight machine so my teen son can lift at home, and I’d like to use it too. It’s been a while but I am a former athlete and know how to do most lifts correctly (and it isn’t free weights - it’s a machine where you load on plates, so helps with positioning).

Does anyone use an app that basically constructs a workout for you and tells you what to do? Personal trainer in an app? If left to my own devices I’m going to just go do some squats and and lat pull downs and call it good, and that would be a waste!

You shoulda bought a rack and free weights in the first place.

Gee, thanks. Since you said so I guess I’ll go return it now.

Caliber.

When you set it up, you tell it what equipment you have and it designs a program for you. It’s been great.

Hope it helps! I’ve been using it for a couple months. I increase weight when I can do all reps in the second set. Good luck! There are groups you can join for support/morale, too.

Does Caliber offer a free level? Or it there a subscription?

NP. Not to totally hijack the thread, but…

I couldn’t find a description on Caliber of how to do the workout. Some exercises list a warmup, and some don’t. And when you log, it lists both sets of the same exercise together. So are you supposed to repeat the same one twice before moving on to the next one, or do you do each exercise once and then go back and do them all again?

I tried my first workout this morning, and the 30 minute workout took me about 10 minutes. I didn’t do the 2-minute rests between because it was too easy, so I’ll try bumping up the weights next time.

You should do both sets one right after the other, after a 2 minute rest.

Once you have your workout set up and have gone through it recording weights, it will set up all the warm ups. It needs to know what you’re lifting to be able to back up the weight for the warm up.

Once you are more comfortable with the workouts, you can go from one set that uses biceps immediately to another set that uses legs, and then back to biceps after a shorter rest, and then again legs…. Basically, you need to rest whatever muscle/muscle groups you’re working for the 2 minutes. If you can do that by switching to a workout that uses a different muscle group, that works.

There should be a short no-sound video or description in the Overview tab for the workouts. Sometimes I go online and look up my own videos to get a better idea of the workout.

The basic is free. Coaching is what costs money.

I just found groups on the app. There are quite a few! The one for my age range is active. I’ve been able to talk about when to change weights, or if adding a short “to failure” third set is helpful.
