| DS flaked on a potential job offer and now has nothing for the summer. It was very flexible which he needs for his sporadic sports schedule and our vacation plans over the summer. DH & I really want him to get some form of a part-time job because he becomes very dysregulated when he has limited structure. What can a newly turned 15 y/o do if they can't work or don't have a ton going on. I'm struggling to come up with some ideas. |
|
He needs to come up with the ideas, as he's 1. 15 years old rather than 5 years old, and 2. the one who screwed up the job he had.
I'd take away his phone and send him to his room and tell him he's not allowed out until he's come up with three viable ideas. |
I would look at the establishments around your home and drive to each at a non-prime hour to ask. That is exactly how my son got his job. The third place we walked into hired him right on the spot. I made sure he brought his resume, ID, and social security JIC. He loves the place where he works. If you are unsuccessful at finding your son a job this way, could you, your husband (family members and friends) inquire if their office is offering intern positions? My office doesn't pay for internships, but the name sounds great on college applications and future job endeavors under experience. My daughter interned at my office for the experience (under a different department). It was very flexible and she actually had interesting assignments. My son will be doing an internship at my husband's office next year. Your son would not be getting paid, but he would get the structure you are looking for, plus experience and service hours (if you work for a non-profit). |

Camps for the sports he plays - maybe talk to any camps he went to when he was younger. My daughters boyfriend is working at a soccer camp (he’s 15) he attended for years so they know him.
My daughter is going to be a camp counselor for our local parks and rec district at 15 but she said a lot of kids from school didn’t get picked bc they don’t have experience like hers (CIT, babysitting) or their availability is spotty. |
Yeah. I'm a fan of this approach. He messed up, he needs to clean up his own mess. Why'd he flake? |
|
Yeah, he needs to feel super dysregulated by the consequences of f$&ing up.
Give him a week to find a job or a volunteer position with comparable hours. If he can’t, things need to get super miserable until he can. Maybe he comes to work with you and sits in the corner without any devices, wil. |

It will be very, very difficult for him to find something at this time...
- it is late and most places have already hired their summer staff - he cannot work much (sports, vacation, etc) -- why would someone want to hire and train your son for a few weeks here and there? - he is 15 (requires extra paperwork) All of this adds up to businesses not wanting to hire your son. Ideas... - Chik-fil-a sometimes hires 15-year-olds. He will probably only get 1 or 2 short shifts per week. Better than nothing perhaps? - He makes signs for neighborhood helper in your meighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods -- weeding, lawn-mowing, babysitting, petsitting, watering gardens, etc. He will have to be able to ride his bike to get to different places. You will have to drive him and equipment if he gets mowing jobs (do you own a lawn mower?) - You look and see if there are any places that are still taking CITs (he will not get paid; likely, you will have to pay the camp to take him) |
| What was the job Op? |
| The job didn't fall through. Teen went for an interview, and never got a formal offer/writing and decided to sit on looking for a new job. |
|
Does it gave to be paid?
Would something like volunteering at the library or nature ctr or the like be an option? They're easier to get since he's 15 yr old |
| Tell him to go find a paying job or volunteering position. Help him get his resume together and send him in his way. The job didn’t fall through he did and now he can climb up the hill. |

Fast food.
I worked part time in for a restaurant at that age. Because I was 15 I could only woke certain hours and had less responsibilities |
| Fast food places, landscapers, Home Depot type stores, and grocery stores. Go in person on a weekday when it’s not very busy and dress neatly. |
