Everything now has added protein varieties, cereal, oatmeal, bars, shakes, chips, cookies, milk etc.
My kid is a very picky eater. We really need to up the protein intake, partially because she's hungry and grouchy without it. I wouldn't mind buying these protein fortified foods, but are they actually healthy? Some are loaded with sugar. Some have fake sugars. What proteins are better - soy isolate, whey, pea? They all seem like over processed junk. (I'm not asking about picky eating here....JUST protein sources) |
Will she eat black beans? My kid loves them with rice or in quesadillas?
Eggs? One egg on a mini bagel is like 12g One slice of WG bread is 5g. Do a sandwich with turkey/cheese that should be plenty. How old is she? |
She's 9. Beans in some forms. No meat. I'm hoping to find sources that are easy to travel with. When we go to someones house and she can't/won't eat what's there. Or even a restaurant. I'm at the point where I'd rather feed her a bar or a shake, than risk a hunger meltdown. Yes there are special needs involved. |
Are you willing to bake yourself? One great, clean protein is peanut flour. |
I think it’s fine. Just avoid the ones with tons of added sugar. I feed my son who won’t eat meat protein waffles to keep him happy. |
I'm very willing to bake. Can't do peanuts in the house. Any good alternatives? And recipes? Whenever I've looked up bar recipes I find they have tons of sugar. I'm not anti all sugar, but when there's more sugar than protein, there's no point. |
I can also do almond flour - I have some now and did start experimenting it with it with mixed results. |
Did you run your search for low sugar or lower sugar? I prefer peanut flour because I’d rather not use whey or commercial protein powders but there are lots of alternatives. Also, I use Kodiak Cake mix as a flour alternative in all my baking. |
The advantage of peanut flour is that it’s de-farted and thus more concentratedly protein. Almond flour is just ground almonds. Not nearly as much protein. |
Omg—deFATTED |
Hahahah...I read the first like 4 times trying to understand! Thank you for the explanation of the difference between the two. I'll do some reading myself and check out some packages too. I do like to bake and experiment but so many of the recipes out there are questionable. Or use fake sugars and protein powder. Sigh. I also do still want a packaged product for travel etc, but for occasional use I'm not too worried about the fake stuff. |
Tofu, soy milk, peanut flour. |
Sunbutter or almond butter with jelly on WG bread? For when u go out or to a friends? |
Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, egg white are all high in protein and you can make a wide variety of foods using them. |
I’m interested in increasing my own protein. I’ve recently been hearing about nutritional yeast and wheat germ, but haven’t finished researching them yet. They sound like they might be useful options, but you should do your own research or check with a doctor. I certainly don’t know enough about them to recommend either. |
