How to build strength in legs for barre?

Anonymous
I have a really difficult time with the leg work in barre class. I can’t keep my poses for more than 10 secs!

You just keep doing barre. A lot of it is mental. Try to hold for one more second and breathe--so important. You'll get there in small steps.

If you want to get better at barre (or any class like it), you have to accept where you are and keep going.

While you're waiting for something in the microwave, practice balancing and tiny leg movements from your class. Do plies and squeeze your glutes while brushing your teeth, etc... Just got in little bits each day and see if you can improve. Even if you had been walking, jogging, doing large muscle group movements, the movements in Barre are different so your muscles have to learn what to do! Be patient

When I first started barre I couldn't hold a plank for longer than maybe 20 seconds. Now I can hold it for longer than 1 minute. Point is you need to keep trying, eventually you'll be holding the poses for longer and longer. Also I used to do Bar Method where staying in one pose for long periods of time was pretty much the style of the class. I have since changed to Barre3 which is a completely different style of class. We don't stay in any one standing position for very long, a lot more movement and flow.
