| Im moving to the area soon, and upon reviewing the student handbook for the school my kids are zoned for, it says school starts at 9:25. That seems...very late compared to the other places I've lived. What gives? |
|
ES have 2 start times. Ours is also 0925.
I believe the other time is 0855/9. |
| 0925 is when some start. It’s a transportation issue. HS goes first, then MS then ES. Some drivers have two ES routes hence the different ES start times |
|
Tier 1 elementary schools are 9:00 a.m.–3:25 p.m.
Tier 2 elementary schools are 9:25 a.m.–3:50 p.m. You can check the school's web site to see which times it has. |
Transportation a disaster. Director refused to evaluate routes or use software to organize. He was embezzling millions and is gone now with his number 2 arrested. Department is now being overhauled so expect changes. |
| They start late because they share busses. So it depends on when the Middle School and High School start. |
The woke need their sleep |
This. Our ES starts at 9:00, our MS starts at 8:15 and our HS starts at 7:45. Every once in a while MCPS does a study on options for making the HS start time later. The biggest roadblock is the cost of purchasing additional busses, which the county wants to avoid. |
Yup. They could have fixed this by building more ESs and making them nearly all walking. |
The problem isn't always proximity - it is also safe routes to school. Yes, if we were willing to overhaul our car-centric culture and create dedicated walking paths for every neighborhood, that would be ideal. But residents often oppose sidewalks, and we have oriented our urban design around cars rather than pedestrians. Fix that, and in 10 years we can maybe revisit the question of start times. |
Yes, but every couple of months, there's this poster who will get all wound up about HS start times and propose that ES start at 7am to make HS more convenient for their child. |
Just need to swap ES and HS start times.
|
Do you think you’re the first person to have suggested that? The reason they do not is that if high schools went as late as elementary schools they could not have after-school sports practices and kids could not have after-school jobs. |
But my astrologer says it has to do with the science. |
| They should make elementary school start at 7:45 and let the high schoolers go in at 9am. |
