Tell me everything about Fairfield University. The name keeps coming up as a "rising star" school. |
I know 2 kids there. Here's what I gather:
Reputation is sort of safety school for wealthy preppy kids in new england/new york. Nice campus. Party school. Big drinking culture (true of many schools, just figured I'd note that it's definitely definitely true of this one) A bit on the conservative side - the kid I know came home more conservative after hanging with peers who are more conservative. Kids seem happy there. Upperclassmen tend to live on or near the beach, and I mean, who wouldn't love that. Good school spirit. |
We toured and know people who attended.
-Beautiful campus, town & location--convenient to NYC and Boston -Gives merit aid; whether that is significant enough is in the eye of the beholder. Don't expect the cost to be under about $36k/year -Has a ''Country Club Republican'' vibe -Very wealthy student body -Strong in ''practical'' fields like nursing, finance, and health sciences (I know someone who graduated last May and is finishing their first year of med school) -Supposedly kids are kind, willing to try new things, and inclusive |
I grew up in a wealthy part of Connecticut and I had never heard of it. I'd only heard of UConn and Connecticut College in terms of local places. |
You grew up in Fairfield County and never heard of Fairfield U? |
You cannot be serious. I grew up in Greenwich and now live in another Fairfield County town. Fairfield U. is very well known regionally. |
A solid conservative college often mentioned as a safety for Catholics in need of financial aid.
Yes, seniors rent beach houses. |
There's no way this is true. |
Wild that they never heard of Yale either. |
Locals always do this. I'm from there I don't know it, I'm from there no one would consider going there... I think it tends to be true, too close and it's so common place that it doesn't get mentioned and some people really never hear of it, and certainly don't consider going. My BIL lived right out side the wall, and I didn't know it was there for many years, then assumed it was a private high school or something. Regional schools don't tend to draw from the most close in area. |
That is correct. I attended Eastern Middle and Greenwich High and I had never heard of it. UConn was amongst my peers a "joke college" and they were focused on Harvard, Yale, Emory etc. Sorry. That wasn't my opinion, just what I knew and was surrounded by. |
Far and away the two most popular colleges for GHS graduates to attend are Norwalk Community College and UConn, but okay. |
I'm sure you are right, but that just was not my experience. |
Totally understandable, since students who want to go to private colleges often want to go "away". Still, to live in Connecticut and claim you haven't heard of Fairfield means you're dumb or lying. At minimum, everyone gets inundated with mailings throughout intermediate/middle school for summer camps there (like ID Tech.) People know the Quick Center for the Arts -- if your kid took music lessons in CT, at some point you were probably invited to play a concert there, or your piano competition took place on campus. If you grew up in CT, you would know Fairfield Prep, which shares a campus. To pretend that the wealthy part of CT wouldn't be aware of Fairfield is one of the most pretentious things I've ever read on this board. |
North Street/CJHS/GHS alum here; can confirm. |
