Nail pops everywhere - pls advise

Anonymous
Up and down my stairs, the drywall is full of nail pops. Did someone not install the drywall properly? How do I fix/approach this?

Cheap installation

How old?

Yes someone didn’t install well. You’ll have to have a painter bang them back in, patch and repaint. If within the first year, have the builder do it.

Can I ask a dumb question, I have never had a new house so I don’t have this problem but aren’t they all screws anyway?

No, a lot of people still use drywall nails.

This is pretty common with new construction, we had our painter fix everything after a year or so when things had settled.

PP is correct. All new construction will settle over time, no matter how expensive. After a year the builder should come back in to address the inevitable nail pops which will appear. Or, any handyman or painter should be able to do it.

You also may see drywall tape seams appear over time, another common artifact of new homes settling. It's not necessarily indicative of poor craftsmanship or low quality, but is in the nature of new construction.

Drywall screws can work their way out of the wall with time as well. You are supposed to remove them and install another screw an inch or two from the original hole. Mud a couple of times, sand, prime, and then paint. I have one house with really good lighting and I swear that nails are popping out of the wall on a daily basis. I also have another house (rental) that is horribly lit, and I swear there are zero nail pops lol

40 years old

Either the house was really badly built or it's settling in a really bad way. I hope it's the former as that can be fixed fairly easily.

Back then they used nails. They do pop after decades. This is VERY common. In our house, we intentionally followed along a stud and popped as many as we could find. Then we inserted a screw on both sides and removed the nail. We pre-emptively popped them all for fear that more would become visible over time. Then you need to do drywall repair. Mud the hole, knock it down, mud again, sand, fill, sand, prime the spots and paint. If the nail pops are along the perimeter, crown moulding can cover some. We did one room at a time. It worked! No more nail pops for 20 years now in this old house!

Nonsense. All houses settle a bit, it's normal for there to be drywall pops.
