Hello from the Sunshine State!

Who here lives in Florida - and where are you?

I'm in St Pete - we moved here from DC almost 9 years ago now. Love it, except for the summers and the grim grim grim grim grim politics.

All politics are grim not matter where you are.

It's really really bad in Florida these days. I've lived a lot of places, and I promise that unless you're in Texas, it's worse here than almost anywhere else.

I’m in the Orlando area. And who else is amazed by the number of Florida topics brought up in a DC based forum. (I found my way here from a nanny post.)

OP what do you like about St. Pete and did you move there for work reasons or retirement?

Was ST Pete hurt by the hurricane Ian? How’s the beach area doing right now?
Anonymous
Not OP but Ian hit further south. St Pete is fine.

I’m in south fla and moved here recently from dc. I still read dcum to stay up on local current events. I find fla incredibly congested, housing/insurance expensive + can be extremely hot. I am not the fastest driver so I need to pick up the speed.
I am a Democrat, but haven’t felt the knives yet and am surprised how nice people can be. Not a conservative, classic and polite crowd like there but still friendly and welcoming. It is sad to read how many people disparage Florida, I’m here!
Looking for my crowd still.

Libs hate Florida because people are happy.

I was raised in NoVa and raised my kids there as well, but now I'm in Sarasota and love it here. I'm a lifelong democrat and have not found any conflict in my daily life here as a result of that. The community I live in is about half red and half blue but hardly anybody ever talks about any of it. (BTW FL voter registration info is available to all online so it's easy to check your area or individual addresses if you want)

Many of us here are very concerned about DeSantis and his politics and the way some things are trending here. Today's travel advisory from the NAACP is one example of many. I do not think it's a reason to stay away from Florida, however, I think it's a reason to be part of the change.

If people are going to stay away from Florida due to DeSantis and his wacky crap what are they going to do if he is elected president? Last year more people visited Florida than in any year previous so it doesn't really look like people are staying away.

And to the "Libs hate Florida because people are happy" person, you sound like an idiot. The libs I know don't hate Florida and they are among the people who are mostly happy.

Oh no. We feel so bad for you. I'm sure you're ready to pack up and move to San Francisco.

When I lived in Florida I was miserable and wanted to die. Leaving was the best thing I ever did for my mental health.

Neither! We both work remotely - hated the weather in DC and wanted to live somewhere with more sun and a better cost of living. We accidentally found our way to St Pete a couple of years before it got really hot, and feel really lucky to have done so - we got the last affordable house in our neighborhood, it sometimes feels like. St Pete is a really great city. It's really beautiful, a really good size, good food, always new things happening. Nice arts scene, some good theater, a couple of good movie theaters. Loads of outdoor activities, massive, well maintained park system. If I have any complaint it's that so many people have moved here that it's gotten a little crowded, but that's a very minor complaint. Bunch of colleges and universities, so it's fun having that sort of stuff around. There isn't much you could feel like doing on any given day, that you can't do.

St Pete is very blue and a lot of our friends are very interested in/involved with politics, so we do talk a lot about it with people we know here. I can understand people in more purple or red parts of the state deciding not to talk so much about it.
