Concussions...How many is too many?

Anonymous
My boy had his fourth confirmed concussion today. Two from US sports, two others from random accidents when he was younger.

I'm a parent that went to public school in the late 80's. Our coaches always told us, "you just got your bell rung, get back out there". it was never an issue when I was a young kid. I just accepted the fact that you had to play when you were hurt.

As I previously mentioned, I was diagnosed with 7 concussions back in the day. I'm sure I had others back then that were not diagnosed. If you were not unconscious, just play on.

I am in my mid 50's and my memory is declining. I can't say its from CTE or for other reasons. Nevertheless, I can't believe that I am having these mental health issues at a relatively young age.

I ABSOLUTELY believe in sports for kids. I think everyone, boys and girls, should be required to play sports.

Having said all that, take care of your kids. You don't have to have your kids brain corrupted by injury.

How old? Four concussions is a lot …you are pushing it. Talk to your pediatrician.

Two is more than enough.

Four would make me strongly reconsider what sports my kid played.

Here's the ongoing DCUM sports thread related to this. Most of the current research suggests that the repetitive sub-concussive blows may also play a prominent role in compromised long term brain health and CTE:

I want to thank you all for your quick replies to my post. My DS has an appointment with a solid sports medicine practice in a couple days (earliest we could get an appointment}.

Again, I appreciate your support!

What ages did he have them at? My son has also had 4–two from stupid stuff (like playing his and seek in a friend’s dark basement in middle school) in middle and high school and two from his sport at age 16 and 18. The last one was really bad and it’s taken a lot of work for him to recover—months without being able to run or drive. I don’t want to go into it here but he was living away from home during Covid when he had the 3rd and we didn’t recognize the affect it had until after the fourth one.

On the plus side, DRs know a lot more these days and treat concussions more seriously than they did not too long ago. They take more time to have the brain heal than they used to. It sounds like you have an appointment with a dr. They will tell you what risks there are with your child.

My daughter’s friend has begun having seizures at school. He has wound up in the hospital several times. They believe they are possibly caused by seizures from multiple concussions he had from playing sports. It’s scary.

I am not a physician, but I would protect my child’s brain over any sport.

My son got one in his sport and if he gets another we are done. Sports just aren't that important to his future.

This is not based on research - just my risk adverse nature.

One is enough. I would never let my child play any sports - nor would I myself - that involve frequent risk of concussion or even semi-concussive injury. With what we are rapidly learning about how brains are damaged in fundamental ways by these injuries even in young people it’s just insane that so many people are trifling with it.
