Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)

Is it common for 5th graders in 5/6 math to take the 6+ MAP-M in spring instead of waiting until 6th grade to switch to the new test?
I don’t recall this being the case for my older children, but my younger one recently took the 6th grade and above test. |
To my knowledge, they don't do this in MCPS. |
They do. That’s why I’m asking. |
|
I asked the same question here last month, and somebody answered the same as above. But I think the switch to 6+ is more logical since they are learning 6 graders’ math. Wondering if the switch is up to the teacher or school- level decision.
Op, how does your child know he/she is taking 6+ Map? Is there any indication at the beginning of the test? |
The teacher told the entire class and warned them their score might drop because it was a middle school test, testing them on sixth grade concepts. |
| Last year my 5th grader in 5/6 took the elem test in Fall and Spring. |
Mine took elementary test (3-5) in fall and winter but 6th plus in spring. |
| My current 5th grader in 5/6 math just took the 6+ MAP-M last week like OP’s child. I don’t know if they’ve done this previous years but it’s happening now. |
| My 5/6 kid just took the 6+ exam and said it was very hard - score went down by more than 20 points vs. winter. |
Strangely, the official MCPS score reports in ParentVUE don't include the 2-5 vs 6+ test name, and the MAP Growth Year-over-Year comparisons compare to the previous year, even though the test must have changed some year. The bottom of the report says "This specific report was created by Montgomery County Public Schools based on MAP Growth data. It was not generated by NWEA." |

NWEA says to not switch tests mid-year.
https://connection.nwea.org/s/article/Transition-student-from-2-5-to-6-Reading-or-Math-test-1405101729354?language=en_US It's really fun to read NWEA docs, where they talk about how they don't understand how their own test works, and how some of their docs contradict their other docs. https://connection.nwea.org/s/article/Why-do-I-see-the-same-math-growth-projection-for-all-of-my-5th-grade-students?language=en_US MAP is really a nonsense test. It's loosely correlated to knowledge of Common Core topics, but the specifics are quite woo. |
| The guidance was updated this year (just a couple of weeks ago) so it is new countywide for the Math 5/6 kids to take the middle school MAP. |
Same for my kid. Went down 10 points. |
Which school does this? |
Wealthy Potomac Schools, I'm sure.
