A lot of the victims and perpetrators have been on both sides of it (both a victim and a shooter). And 96 percent of those are Black, and 90% are male.

You’re not wrong. Progressive criminal justice reform is so hot right now, even John Legend is a big proponent. So is Kim Kardashian. Never mind that it seems to exacerbate crime rates. Who knew that lowering penalties, lessening sentences and revising existing laws to be more permissive would lead to an environment where criminals felt more free to commit crimes? This isn’t Fox News propaganda. I live in the middle of DC. Our city council won’t even take away drivers licenses from people with $13k in speeding tickets. Then those same people crash and…ugh all of you know exactly what I mean. Basically liberals think they can solve things with programs and wraparound services and addressing the root cause of crime in perpetuity and letting teens off with a slap on the wrist for assault and battery. It’s nuts. All of it. |

You are arguing in bad faith. Or misunderstanding that post. Or both. They didn’t start it to be racist (I hope). The OP was basically encapsulating how, progressives, in their attempts to lower disparate impact rates of arrest, incarceration etc, (which are clearly lopsided) are doing so by creating a more permissive environment for crime. And anyone who complains about the statistics or why crime is rising etc is shut down with a label of “racist”. This is a tough conversation to have. You can’t just allow crime to happen. Or give restorative Justice hugs instead of jail because it’s “fair”. |

I believe that things like restorative justice and giving kids a second chance can have some usefulness but they need to be followed through on and have the full wrap-around programming needed for kids to succeed. And that's where we fail, over and over, and over again, by not having any followthrough, and not having the programming.
These kids will STILL end up going out into the world barely literate, lacking any proper coaching, interventions, mentoring, life skills, without a summer reading camp or anything else to help them succeed, nor summer job to keep them from being idle and surrounded by bad influences, and without any mandates or consequences for skipping out on the insufficient, minimal things that currently exist. So yes, it is no surprise that it ends up being a permissive environment with minimal positive reinforcement, minimal consequences, leading to ever escalating levels of misbehavior. The problem is half-baked half-measures. If they aren't actually going to take the rest of the steps to reform and rehabilitate these kids then it's all a waste. |
