Hi All
Need some help for appeal and what to include int he letter / package please. NNAT: 160 CogAT: Verbal: 125 Quantitative: 106 Nonverbal: 108 Composite: 115 iReady: Reading 54% Mathematics 31% WISC: FSIQ: 123 94% VCI: 92 30% VSI: 119 90% FRI: 151 99.9% WMI: 107 68% PSI: 129 97% My child grew up only speakign Russian at home, and only started English from first grade. She is very advanced in Russian language. Her teacher has always been a bit biased towards her, sometimes making comments about my child speaking another language in school. GBRS were low, with 2 Frequently and 2 Occasional scores. I spoke with my child and she got anxius seeing all ehr friends leave the room during i-Ready, so she just clicked through the test t leave with them. As you can see her WISC is a lot more consistent with her NNAT scores. We do also suspect her of having ADHD(not diagnosed), which her mom has (medically diagnosed). What would be a strategy for an appeal letter? What should I focus on? I appreciate any and all help |
The wisc isn’t all that great but I think I would include it for the FRI score. You should appeal but if your kid doesn’t get in, it will be fine.
I would focus on nnat and the FRI portions - especially highlight those and English as a second language. I think you could mention adhd and 2E and aap being a good place for that. |
I mean the wisc is good generally but for aap it’s not super high. To be clear. |
given english is not my first language, would it be possible tot have someone here perhaps proofread my letter?

Submit the GAI for the WISC; it should be higher than the FSIQ |
I am sorry, I don’t mean to be rude but with those scores I don’t think you will want her in AAP. I would focus on her math and reading skills first. There is so much reading and they go fast with the math curriculum (in our school they cover 3rd and 4th grade math in 1 year). These scores (except the NNAT) are low and with a bad GBRS it will be hard to have a successful appeal. They don’t give much wait to the NNAT test. |
Given how noisy the selection process is, I don't think OP's appeal is impossible. And there's a range of abilities in L4 . If OP thinks DC is up to try L4 (and isn't afraid that DC might find it too much) an appeal is worth a try. |
The WISC is not good. |
Honestly, you should probably note that in your letter. I think that would get your "points." |
123 is not very high. sure, kids get in with Wiscs like that, like popular kids whose mom is class parents, but it's not that high. |
I appreciate all the feedback. We will go through the appeal, I guess worst case it Will still be a no. Perhaps a bit biased as her parent, however I do strongly believe that she’s up for the challenge, and candidly she performs better under pressure. |
Hi All, Need some help on Appeal 2023:
Current grade :2nd grade NNAT - 132 - 98 percentile COGAT- 132 - 98 percentile WISC - 125 I READY - MATH - 95 Percentile I READY - ENGLISH - 65 Percentile Progress Reports - Almost 4s in all grades. Can you guide me whether I can put the WISC score or not? Thank you |
Above Average: 120-129. Students who test in this range are above average and do not generally struggle in school. I do not think a WISC 125 is helpful. I'm sorry. |
If this were my kid, I would not appeal this year. I would supplement at home in Russian and let her find her way more slowly in the classroom. As she gets more fluent in English, she will be able to keep up with the advanced work. She is clearly struggling right now with all those low scores. AAP will not help her confidence. Retake the cogat next year or the year after and reapply with higher scores and gbrs. |
She is a bright child but her English needs to improve for her to have success in her grade. The iReady scores and her CoGAT scores point to a child who is not in a place for working at an accelerated pace.
She has only been speaking English at school for a few years and you want to push her into a class that is going to be reading and writing even more and where the math is moving more quickly. Her Russian language skills have no bearing on her readiness for AAP because she is not at a Russian Immersion school, FCPS does not offer that program. She is being based on how well she is grasping the material in English and it sounds like that is not going as well as you would like. I would start using English more at home or find her an English tutor to work with over the summer and get her up to speed with her reading, writing, and spoken English. If you suspect ADHD, and her WiSC scores have some areas with clear gaps, I would be working on getting that diagnosed and start treating her ADHD. Apply for AAP when she is in a place to grasp the material and have success. Right now you are setting her up to fail because she does not have the necessary skills to succeed. |
