Hi, congrats to all whose kids were admitted.
We were fortunate to see that our son was also admitted. I do have question. He will land up at TJ having to take TJ Math 1 ie Geometry and due to the path TJ has for math, he will be able to take AP Calculus only by senior year. I hear other kids typically start at much faster pace. Will he be at a significant disadvantage in terms of other courses dependent on Math and in the end for college applications? |
No. |
I would go to the TJ Math page and look at the classes that are offered and what the pre recs are for those classes. I would also check the Science classes because there might be an impact there.
I don’t have a child at TJ but I believe that the benefit to TJ is that there are specialized math and science classes for kids who are advanced in math and science. I would guess that a student taking Geometry as a Freshman at TJ is not going to have access to the specialized classes. |
op here.
thanks.. AP physics required Calculus, but can be taken concurrently ( which will be by Senior year) Agree starting with Geom might limit the course selection. |
The regular AP Physics class should require calc. I don't know about TJ so I guess anything is possible but normally it's just Physics C that requires advanced math and the regular AP Physics requires Algebra 2. |
sorry "should NOT require calc" |
coursework:
9: rs1 + math 1 10: math 2 + math 3 11: math 4 + math 5 12: ap calc ab/bc that's the math progression, but if you take geometry over the summer 9: rs1 + math 3 10: math 4 + math 5 11: ap calc ab/bc 12: ap stats/ap calc bc/multi + linear i would def do geometry over the summer..little downside and it can give your kid the opportunity to do multi |
PP - u are exactly right. |
Congratulations, OP and kid! Please don't stress too much, but it is a good idea to continue to do academic work over the summer, as school summers are long, and kids' memories are short ![]() |
Thanks for posting the math progression.
I hope we can do Geometry in the summer before joining TJ. But if not, I think its ok. DC is not a math super star ( good but needs practice and time to develop intuitive understanding) - so will take it as it goes. My main concern was impact on taking other courses - and that is a factor but for now we wont stress about it. I should have mentioned DC has ruled out med school. so its comp sci or traditional engg path. |
For those who finished Geometry in 8th grade, is it beneficial to complete Algebra 2 in the summer? DC currently signed up PE 9 in the summer, and only 1 credit can be earned in the summer. Not sure he should switch from PE9 to Algebra 2 with Trig. |
Kid will be totally burned out if he takes geometry over the summer and hasn’t gone over the material beforehand. It will be a serious 7hr commitment daily for 6 weeks. Summer is 9 weeks. That means no break. The fact that he/she took algI in 8th means that you had some reason for not taking it in 7th. Either kid didn’t qualify or didn’t like math enough or wasn’t emotionally ready. I’d find another way to speed up. |
Why rush math? Seriously, there is no race to Calculus. The best you can hope for is your kid enjoys it while developing a strong foundation. |
PP and PP-1 : OP here. I recall he didnt do that well on some test (iowa). Overall he is not that fluent even though he probably is at Algebra 2 level in terms of concepts etc
TJ is already hard enough. So as PP says, let him take the full curriculum at TJ - hopefully that builds a solid foundation for whats ahead. Yeah - not a fan of doing Geometry in Summer! |
Why rush math? Why rush reading or why rush writing? This is TJ which uniquely offers advanced courses and advanced research labs/research opps based on advanced courses in science, technology engineering and MATH! Go to advanced HS for Humanities if not interested in advanced math courses and let someone who is interested in and actually able to take advantage of advanced math and other courses that are based on advanced math. |
