Your Favorite Domestic Summer Vacation

Anonymous
I know it's a little late to be planning a summer vacation but I'm determined. We want to stay domestic. Kids are late teens.

We did a whitewater rafting trip in Oregon that was fantastic. And probably not too late to book.

Some favorites that you can feasibly plan last minute:

-Grand Tetons/Jackson Hole
-Lake Tahoe, you can find a place although all the lakefront properties are probably booked
-Hawai’i any of the islands really, but Big Island might be the best experience
-San Juan Islands, but look now because good lodging books up quickly

What do you like to do and do you like heat?

Disney — Florida or Anaheim
San Diego
Seattle
Chicago
Hilton Head
Cape May or another one of the Jersey beaches

Grand Teton / Jackson / Yellowstone (I always plan last minute - I'm talking like a few weeks before -- and never had an issue getting lodging - I did it last summer, too! Look for lodging in West Yellowstone if you can't get anything inside the park)

+1

Colorado (some combination of Estes Park/RMNP and ski resort areas) is also awesome in the summer.
Utah parks (Zion, Bryce, Arches) are also great, but HOT in the summer.

We're also late planners and we've had great vacations with our teens and college students in:

San Francisco and Tahoe

Jackson/Tetons/Yellowstone

Seattle/Olympic National Park

Portland OR/Hood River

Santa Fe

Chicago/Lake Michigan from Saugatuck to Sleeping Bear Dunes

Cape Cod
Nantucket
Montauk

Alaska - fly into Anchorage, rent a car and drive around for a week. Its incredible.

Santa Fe and Bandelier national monument
San Diego
Los Angeles
Point Reyes National Seashore
Pacific Northwest (Portland, Seattle, Cannon Beach, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Hood, Crater Lake)
NYC
Boston
Teddy Roosevelt National Park in ND
some less crowded national parks that also shouldn't be super hot in the summer like Isle Royale in Michigan or Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota or Acadia in Maine or North Cascades in Washington

Yeah some things will be booked but I think there's still a ton of great options at this point and some of these you can plan w/ very short notice.

Maine - split time between Acadia and upstate lake.

Agree with Oregon rec. I bet it isn't too late to plan an awesome trip to Bend. July would be better than August because of wildfires. Olympic NP is also great, it's probably too late to get reservations in the park but you could probably find a place to stay during the week in Forks (Twilight!) And Port Angeles.

Acadia
Hilton Head

And I’m still a sucker for OBX. I just have lots of good memories there / many summers.

Glacier, Acadia

We also had a great Maine trip splitting time between Acadia and a lake in the middle of nowhere.
