My guess --- and it is a guess -- not reports or other information --- is that the ACC makes the offer Thursday.

Stanford pretending they have options is cute

They do. Independent. Not a long term fix but buys them a couple/few years.

They could do an ND and go ind. for football and ACC for all other sports.

This would destroy Stanford's other sports. Too much mid-week long-distance travel.

Becoming an independent for a year may be the better option for Stanford. The ACC would require a long-term commitment for a short-term relationship due to the extensive travel demands.

I get it but Stanford is already all in on this.

They would have a tough time putting together a football schedule let alone a schedule for non-revenue sports

Stanford is in a state of panic. Too used to being the center of attention regarding elite academics combined with a robust all-around athletics program. May be a bit too much for the new Stanford President to handle. Probably thought that the Big Ten would make an offer.

As ridiculous as it may be, Stanford's only ticket to the Big Ten Conference is coming now along with Notre Dame at the request of Notre Dame.

Next year, 4 West Coast universities will join the Big Ten Conference and be able to vote on applications for membership in the conference. Stanford won't be accepted because USC, UCLE, U Washington, & U Oregon do not want any other competition for the top West Coast football recruits. There would be a chance for Stanford after next year, but it would be tied to Notre Dame.

Stanford may have to consider downgrading its football program as options for a Power 4 Conference are not attractive or are not realistic options.

There is always the AAC.

Stanford would never consider this. It could happen but Stanford would never do this willingly or otherwise.

I think Stanford wants to pull ND into the ACC not the Big10. I think that is their play.

In terms of California recruits ---- yes they compete with those schools but at the same time they don't. Some PP said that academics do not matter for Stanford football. That is flat wrong. They matter a lot. Stanford also has a more national recruiting profile not solely focused on California.

Football schedule would be easy easy. I agree on the others.

Also for every sport except football, basketball, women's soccer, and women's LAX, Stanford would be the run away favorite.

Why would the ACC agree to that? That's all the downside of a west coast member without their market for football

Because it gets them in the door. Same reason they did it for ND. Increases the chance that they come in for football.

Stanford is not ND. They are probably looking at the MWC (assuming the MCW even wants them) or the AAC

I agree football would not be that bad. Not all the way across the country:

1. Cal

2. ND

3. SMU

Add in a couple of local games BYU, Fresno, or SD State.

Then say home for:

NC State
BC
Syracuse
GTech

Away

Clemson
NC
Miami

They cannot go to either because there is no competition for them there for most sports. Stanford would own the ACC for most Olympic sports never mind those conferences.

That’s actually interesting. The acc schools would lose almost every sport championship to Stanford and still be a sucky football conference with discount tv money. I’ll bet the traditional ACC schools balk at that.

That's not the ACC's problem, it's Stanford's. I think a year or two of recruiting with a cross country travel schedule will kill recruiting for their non-revenue sports no matter what conference they land in

Stanford / Cal ditch the 4-PAC and should form the Two-PAC (Tupac) conference.

I’m not entirely sure. The ACC has good programs in baseball, tennis, wrestling, basketball, fencing, swim and dive, and more. While Stanford definitely has some good teams, I think the ACC teams deserve a little more credit too.

(OP here)

Very low chance that Stanford would join the ACC for any sport other than football.
