AAP if moving from out of district

Anonymous
I saw that the procedure is to send in a WISC score, which we have. Do you know what the WISC score cut off is? We are moving from Arlington to Fairfax. My daughter is both gifted and has autism. Are there any schools or AAP centers that are better for twice exceptional kids?

Thank you.

There is no numerical cutoff, every child is evaluated "holistically" compared to their individual neighborhood school peers, so it is quite possible that your child would be found eligible applying from one area but not in another (once they are found eligible, you can move wherever you want and the eligibility transfers with you).

You need to reside within FCPS to apply, so if you haven't moved yet I believe your child will need to complete at least a semester in GenEd before AAP is possible, unless you go to a place where they receive a guest slot from the principal. Sleepy Hollow ES is an autism services hub I think and has local level IV, very positive, charming community with great staff. May be worth checking out? Lake Barcroft neighborhood is gorgeous too if you have the budget.

This is OP. The website is clear that my daughter needs to be registered at a school before I apply, but I did not understand she needs to complete a semester in gen Ed before she transfers. That’s not a good idea for her. I don’t want her to change schools twice. Change is VERY hard for her. Thank you for your help.

If you choose to live in boundary for a center school or one with LLIV, it wouldn’t require changing schools. She’s just move classrooms at the beginning of next year into a designated room.

How old is your child?

Normally it takes time to process the application and I think they like to observe the child which is why there is some time in Gen Ed. Was she identified as needing advanced services in Arlington? FCPS normally honors the services from the counties within Virginia. So if Arlington had designated her for GT services in Arlington she might not have the wait.

She doesn’t need to do a semester. We moved to FCPS from another state as a military family. I submitted his IQ score from a neuropsychologist and needed a copy of her license. I also submitted a letter from his gifted teacher. He was placed directly in AAP. He is also autistic and gifted. Sangster Elementary was a good fit for him. It was less so for his gifted brother with ADHD but that is mainly due to one horrible teacher and the admin not helping us.

The fact that he was already in a gifted program probably led to immediate placement.

Not exactly……we moved during the summer and got a letter for a non level IV placement but it changed a day or two later. We had to apply through Gatehouse not at the school level the AART talked us through the process.

Not exactly. He wasn’t placed directly into it as his paperwork went through Gatehouse. It just happened that his placement was changed before school started. The AART talked us through the process. He has an IQ in the 140s so I don’t know if that is a factor. His younger brother was in the school referral group and the AART said we didn’t need to do a parent package for him when he went into Level IV services.

There is a process for handling placement over the summer if that’s when you transfer. That’s what we did with DD. We did need to show proof of residency to apply though.

You have to do it immediately on moving though.

“ NOTE: This process is ONLY for families physically moving into Fairfax County boundaries. Current Fairfax residents attending private or home school either follow the private or home school procedure or go through fall screening for current FCPS students.”

They streamline the process for military families to help with the move.

If your child qualifies for Level 4 services, you will have the option to access services in an AAP center that is matched with the elementary school in your catchment area. It’s determined by your address. You cannot “shop around” for a different placement. All schools are required to meet a child’s IEP, so there isn’t one school that is better than another. It’s just what the school has to do.

This is OP. The way I can shop around, though, is by choosing where to live, unless I’m misunderstanding something about the way the process works. We aren’t military. We would be moving over the summer. Deciding between Fairfax and Montgomery County. The neuropsych suggested a self contained gifted classroom for DD, and they don’t have that in APS. I can’t recall her IQ score but she’s in the 99th percentile. I obviously don’t want to go to the expense and inconvenience of moving, though, and then find out that she doesn’t qualify.

APS offers push in gifted services. If she is receiving those services, she should be able to be placed in AAP. If she does not then you will have to apply. At least, that is how I read the information.
