Pregnant and constantly STARVING

Anonymous
This is my third pregnancy but the first time I’ve experienced this…it’s a scary and almost PRIMAL hunger. Is this normal? How do you handle it? I can’t just eat 4 subs a day but honestly even if I did that I’d still have this raw painful empty stomach feeling an hour later

Is your belly hungry or do you just want to munch? If the latter, I'd do the whole drinking water thing, along with eating nuts and seeing if the crunch helps.

If your belly is actually grumbling, then eat health foods.

Belly painfully hungry. Definitely not that I just feel like snacking - in fact I often can’t even think of any food that would sound even remotely appetizing, and frankly I’m just tired of the act of eating. But it’s a physical discomfort, and a really strong one at that…I would say I almost feel constantly ravenous

Check in with your dr about this just to be sure it's only a weird quirk.

13, but it’s felt this way for a couple weeks

I felt nothing even close to this in my two previous pregnancies

I got this -- for me the solution was the make sure to eat meat twice a day (usually I only eat meat a couple times a week) and eat a LOT of full fat dairy. Usually a bowl of cereal with whole milk before bed helped for some reason. I had to experiment a bit to find out what I needed -- light or healthy snack were just frustrating because I was constantly eating and was never satisfied. Getting serious animal protein at meals helped enough that I stopped thinking constantly about how hungry I was.

This would make me terrified it was twins. Especially for the third!! Eek.

Are you getting enough sleep? Possibly your body is exhausted and is looking for anything to run on?

Lol I TOTALLY had this thought…luckily I’m far enough along to have had a few ultrasounds and there’s just one in there!

This is really helpful - thank you! I’ve been trying to up my protein consumption but I’m really going to prioritize trying this

Gestational diabetes

Meat full fat dairy and nuts and seeds too help me with this. The carbs like pasta just make it worse.

Both of my pregnancies were like this. Both boys. To be honest, I just ate. I tried to eat healthy food, but I ate a lot. Gained 40 lbs (starting at 120 5’6”) and lost it plus more each time within 3 months. My metabolism just goes crazy when I’m pregnant, I guess.

Eat more protein and less junk.

I was like this with my last two pregnancies (I wasn’t as hungry during my first two). Boys. I was starving all the time. No gestational diabetes—just hungry all the time.
