Why hasn’t university of Utah blown up for oos like Boulder/Burlington?

Very picturesque setting, ultra easy access to absolutely world class outdoors activities/powder, very easy access to a clean and moderate size airport, some city amenities, students are in shape and surprisingly attractive, undergrad academics are decent (typical state school), pretty safe.

Other than inversion layer what am I missing?

Is it the “Mormon cult” thing? That part is way less Mormonish than Provo/byu.

Not saying it should be at cu or Vermont tier but it also shouldn’t be this under the radar .

People are wary of Mormons.

Can you explain in greater detail?

Im not mormon but I’ve been out there many times and it seems pretty decent?

And also slc is rapidly de-mormoning and byu is the one that gets the hard core Mormons

People who haven’t been to UT are wary.

Most people who haven’t been to SLC don’t realize how non-Mormon it is.

Also easy to get instate tuition

This sounds great. Thanks for the tip.

It’s at the top of my kid’s list right now—we’re in state for Colorado but Utah is much cheaper than CSU or Boulder would be. 30 minutes to Park City is attractive as well.

I think the city is the big difference. Salt Lake City is fine but not particularly interesting for a college student. Feels a little desolate to me. Boulder and Burlington are fantastic towns.

Interesting — Utah is rapidly becoming the go-to spot for east coasters on ski trips so I imagined the word got out to those families who are considering cu-Boulder and uvt-Burlington oos sincr that demo overlaps pretty heavily with Utah ski trip demo

This also.

Salt Lake City is fun to visit, and Utah is great for skiing, but I would not want to go to college that lacks diversity

It’s Mormon. They are not fun.

The vast majority of people don’t care about this

I say this as a minority. College is shockingly self segregating — more than highschool was

My main knowledge of Utah is from Mormons on social media. Lots of stuff about BYU on tiktok - strict honor code, anti LGBTQ+, married after six weeks of knowing someone etc. I realize University of Utah isn't BYU but those are all the things that come to mind when I hear about Utah.

This has given me second thought, so thanks for expanding my horizons OP!
