College and University Discussion
| So i have not waded through all the Northeastern posts here but sharing a development. A month or so ago my high schooler was told he was accepted. THEN they said he had to do 3 years in London and could come to Boston his senior year. NOW they are saying he can do freshman year in london and then Boston the next 3 years. |
| Sounds like a mess! |
"told he was accepted. THEN they said he had to do 3 years in London and could come to Boston" This is most likely one event in one letter. |
+1000 So now, those 200+ students they were planning to have in London for 3 years will be able to show up in Boston fall 2024. NEU basically caved to parental/student complaints and realized if they didn't they wouldn't get those students. Did the same with NUBOund last fall (this school year). Initially "no housing when returning to Boston campus", 3 weeks later "you are eligible for housing the remaining 3-4 years as long as you take housing 2nd year upon return and follow the normal housing rules for elibility". So next fall there will be 200+ more students in campus housing because of this decision. Basically, NEU changes parameters all the time, in order to get more students. Without thinking of the actual consequences to ALL the students on the Boston campus. The over crowding will not end anytime soon..... |
| Who on earth would want to go to this horror? |
Shit-ton apparently |
OP, can you share the approximate timeline of when these events occurred? (I have a high stats/likely NMSF junior increasingly interested in Northeastern and I'm skeptical of wading into this application mess. I can hardly explain it to him.) |
….and then place kids in overcrowded dorms, with singles converted to doubles or doubles converted to triplets, OR keep them in hotels where they totally miss out on college and still charge astronomical amounts! Would send my kid to any other 100 National or top 25 national SLAC than here! |
Not OP, but had a 2022 HS grad who waded into this application mess of NEU for a bit. Unless you do ED (and even then Boston is not a guarantee), be prepared to be offered a "non traditional start" at NEU. Be prepared for the program not being fully defined when you get your acceptance offer, unless it's NUIn and even then they do NOT have the locations set for a few months. But all other programs are in flux and not well defined until March/April. It was mid March last year before NUBound was well defined program---got EA acceptance in late Jan. The "housing" was defined by mid March, but by then my kid had moved onto other choices for many reasons---including the fact that NUbound did not offer enough classes for their major if they had a lot of AP credits for STEM courses...so why go somewhere that half your freshman year is classes you do NOT need. |
| They have also told Oakland students they can come to Boston after one year after first saying they had to stay for at least 2. |
| What is this new program called? Sounds like an international student exchange program where students spend 1 year in NU Boston location. It's not NUin or NU bound right? |
They probably had a lot of students decline and then changed their game midstream to improve their yield. |
| What school changes program options mid-stream like this? Pass. |
| Why would anyone even apply to a school that pulls stunts like this? |
Because there is no supplemental essay and many are getting fee waivers. Also, US News shows them as a "top" school since they have gamed the rankings. All part of their games. Will just continue though as more and more people fall for it. |
