Seniors' last day May 26th?

Anonymous
We had a senior parent meeting tonight and I thought I heard that the seniors' last school day would be May 26th. Is this true, and what happens to their classes after that? Is work just excused?

Seniors graduate before the school year ends. No sense going to class after they graduate.

But the final transcripts then get sent to the college, right? If the grades of the last quarter go down because seniors skip the last 3 weeks, are there consequences?

OP here. I'm not American, and in my home country, every grade has their own set of classes, which means that when final exams end, seniors don't have any classes to return to, while the rest of high schoolers continue with their classes. Here with mixed-grade classes I don't see how it works!

Yes, they weren't lying. (I was there too!) Seniors' grades are closed out at that point. Classes with mixed grades continue with work and assignments that seniors don't have to do.

(At our school, this year's graduation is only a week before the rest of the school lets out, but sometimes schools have much earlier graduations. I believe they routinely let seniors out on the same day (appears to be right before Memorial Day at our school over the last few years) rather than make that contingent on a floating graduation date.

Ooh. So for seniors, the 4th quarter is a little bit shorter and they are graded on fewer assignments. OK. Thank you for explaining! Maybe we can go on vacation earlier than planned

We also just got information about testing days, when students only have a half day of classes. And then if they have AP exams, they can miss the rest of their classes that day. There's definitely less school happening fourth quarter, especially for seniors!

Yes, once the last day of classes for seniors hit, they are set free!

The reason for this is that the graduation ceremonies start happening. It takes a few weeks to get them all in. It would not be fair for Schools A's seniors to get out earlier than School B's so all seniors just finish early. AP classes have already ended anyways.

The Friday before Memorial Day weekend has been the last day of school for seniors for quite some time. Let's face it, they're checked out already and there is no point in the charade of making them come to school. This is even truer for kids who take AP classes. At my kid's school, they didn't do anything in class after AP exams except maybe some busy work.

+1 For all intents and purposes, they will stop teaching new material in AP/IB classes after April because of AP/IB exams. That's what happened last year when DC was a junior.

So for my DC, school will be over after April. They will be taking several AP/IB exams in May. Then last day is May 26.

DC said it can't come soon enough. I think DC is burnt out.

Equity in skipping classes!

It's not skipping classes. Seniors are dismissed on that Friday and the schools don't want them in the building after that (with exceptions).
