Yes, they weren't lying. (I was there too!) Seniors' grades are closed out at that point. Classes with mixed grades continue with work and assignments that seniors don't have to do.

(At our school, this year's graduation is only a week before the rest of the school lets out, but sometimes schools have much earlier graduations. I believe they routinely let seniors out on the same day (appears to be right before Memorial Day at our school over the last few years) rather than make that contingent on a floating graduation date.[/quote]

Ooh. So for seniors, the 4th quarter is a little bit shorter and they are graded on fewer assignments. OK. Thank you for explaining! Maybe we can go on vacation earlier than planned :-)

The reason for this is that the graduation ceremonies start happening.  It takes a few weeks to get them all in.  It would not be fair for Schools A's seniors to get out earlier than School B's so all seniors just finish early.  AP classes have already ended anyways.[/quote]

It's not skipping classes. Seniors are dismissed on that Friday and the schools don't want them in the building after that (with exceptions).[/quote]
