WHOA! USC went over $90,000 a year startling this fall!

[list]I believe that’s a first for an institution breaking into the 90s? I don’t know how MC and UMC families like us can afford this (mine went in-state - we received no merit and no financial aid and even then it was a struggle). By my calculations (inflation only) my slac should now be $28k but it is $83k. $90k a year is mind-boggling

Holy CRAP.

This is estimated cost of attendance. Not what you would actually pay the school.

There are plenty who do pay full price. Make enough and there are no other options at the Top schools

Not true for us. We received no merit and nothing from FAFSA - just the $5500 unsubsidized student loan from the feds.

That’s not what PP is saying. You’re conflating cost of attendance with tuition. Of course your kids could make cheaper housing choices to keep it down, for example. Also your kids can work, and in a HCOL place they’ll be paid better.

Most of the elite private full pay is well over 80K

There is a category of schools that is largely defined by mediocre rich kids.

True. Many, like Northwestern, have stalled at $88k, waiting to see which institution goes over $90 first.

Why are we even talking about a number other than tuition? Other costs are up to you to manage.

Again, this number is not "full price". It is the estimate cost of attendance and includes personal spending etc

- paying full price at another private

None of these control rising rent costs.

That's not entirely true since many schools require students to live on campus for some or all years and there is not always a lot of variety in cost of on-campus housing or food. Sure, the estimated costs sometimes inflate how much you must spend on stuff like travel, books, and supplies (these are all areas you can minimize costs in a variety of ways) but room and board is not that flexible and the estimated costs are usually pretty typical of reven bare-bones housing and food options on or near campus.

But we aid full price. No merit for any of three kids and our FAFSA indicated we could afford full freight, which we really couldn’t
