S/o: The shrinking middle class at top schools

Anonymous
There has been a lot of research on this. It’s real and totally logical given higher than inflation price hikes for decades.

https://www.aei.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Low-Income-Students-at-Selective-Colleges.pdf

We do not find evidence that the share of students enrolled at these 200 institutions who are from the low- est income quartile declined during the years covered in our study. Students from high-income families were a growing share of enrollment at these institutions in the mid-2000s. Meanwhile, the share of students at selective colleges who are from middle-income fam- ilies has steadily declined over time, particularly stu- dents from the third income quartile.

Isn’t this the goal? Why else would you charge everyone else under 10% of HHI, but charge this in-between group 40%? This is not rocket science. It’s like the first week of Econ 101.

This is exactly what I have been saying.

Hard working tax paying middle class should be rewarded not punished for the society and country to be healthy.

Implying that low-income families aren’t hardworking or taxpaying.

The wealthy keep their stranglehold on access to elite institutions- throw some bones to the underclass to deflect criticism. DEI is also designed to racialize what is an income inequality issue. Privilege is tied to whiteness rather than wealth

I didn't say that, but middle class is surely getting punished.

No she/he wasn't implying that. And I say that as someone who grew up poor and am not solidly middle class. They're saying that group is punished, period. And they are.

Real middle class are getting financial aid. You mean wealthy DCUM middle class who live in million dollar homes and choose not to save and yet demand their kids go to the most expensive schools. The rest of us, who are real middle class live within our means, or under our means to save for state school.

Yes, it's obvious, since tuition costs have increased faster than salaries.

I'll go further. In industrialized societies (industrialization created the middle class), it's that class that provides the fundamentals for a functioning economy. As a block, they contribute the most money.

The middle class is also always the driver of cultural norms and morals. It has a lot of power, even though rising costs have redefined what it means to be middle class.

I think the middle class is being priced out of a lot things…colleges, housing, good public schools. It doesn’t bode well for society if only a small segment of people can have these things. And by the way, I think the poor are even worse off than the middle class. And no, when I say colleges, I don’t mean elite, super expensive ones. I think that DCUM assumes middle class means 200k plus HHI that keeps increasing over the years. Nah, most of us middle class people have not seen our incomes increase by much. But yet everything is more expensive.

A fool and his money are soon parted. You can get an excellent education for $10-30k a year if you study hard and shop around. It’s only the super wealthy dumb enough to spend $85k a year on junior.

How many whiny threads do you plan to start on this exact same topic?

I think my family is real middle class. 4 kids, $110k combined income. DD got $0 in financial aid.

You should look into this, if you feel like getting into a really bad mood.
