PSA - If your child knows they aren’t going to a school please have them decline now

Anonymous
Hi - as many RD decisions are approaching, if your DC knows they won’t be attending a school at which they’ve been accepted, please have them decline. It may open up an opportunity for someone who has it as their dream school.

This is not how it works.

Maybe OP means if an RD acceptance relegates a previous EA acceptance to a definite No, decline as soon as possible, after weighing in Finanical geographic etc etc considerations. Agree OP. We did this last year, it’s the right thing to do.

It doesn’t work like that OP.

By this point decisions have been made. Maybe your kid is on the waitlist and that slot will open up because an EA student drops but it won’t matter at this stage before the decisions are released in a few weeks.

I’d say do it to help your DC start mentally getting to a decision too - they can only attend one even if they have 20 acceptances.

DS is waiting on RD decisions and admitted students' days to decide, OP. It's a bit dangerous to write off a school now, even though a student might be 95% sure they won't attend. It does not change the likelihood of your kid or mine being admitted off the waitlist if others take their time to decide.

Schools guess at how many will accept/decline. They will reevaluate that once decisions are received. Someone indicating now that they aren’t accepting is not going to open a waitlist spot.

They are 100% certain and have other options. So no harm.

Sure. But most kids are not in that category.

Sorry, OP. My DC will wait until May 1st.

It doesn’t work this way for admissions, but it can impact merit aid.

No one owes it to you to drop. As a pp noted, the schools anticipate a percentage of students will decline. Telling them now won’t move the waitlists at all.

Schools accept more students than they know will attend. They have algorithms to predict yield. Students admitted EA declining a spot now does not[b] cause a college to admit +1 extra person later this month. If the college overestimated yield, they can go to their waitlist later.
