Does anyone know what the actual cut off is for summer school eligibility is this year? There's information online but it's pretty vague. |
My understanding is that they had a hard time staffing it last year which lead to significantly reduced number of kids who were able to attend. I think our DC may qualify, and very eager to hear and try to plan. This last minute stuff is incredibly difficult for working parents. |
OP here. I was lucky in that my younger child did qualify and was able to attend last year. It helped but it's hard to say how much. I suspect they will qualify again this year but am curious and hope to find some other academic supports this summer if they don't. I agree that it's hard for working parents. At least this year we are finding out ahead of when county camps open registration. There tend to be some camps (particularly those run by Baroody but not through the county, and some others) that don't fill up and have flexibility up until this summer. We are keeping July open for my younger child in the hopes that they qualify, but arer investigating backup options as well. |
Any child with an IEP automatically qualifies. I don’t know about score cut-offs… last year my then-second grader scored “well below goal” on the DIBELs all year but wasn’t offered summer school. |
No they don't. A child with an IEP might qualify under ESY but not all kids with IEPs need ESY. |
No, they do not. It's based on the middle of year testing which should be in parentvue today. If they are in the red in DIBELS composite or "below basic" in the math inventory (can be one or the other), they can attend strengthening. |
My third grader is in these levels. Am I a horrible parents if I don’t make them go to summer school? |
No, there’s lots of value in summer recreation. I’d get some workbooks |
This is false. Like I said above, my kid was in red (far below goal) in DIBELS all year last year and was not offered summer school. This year, with an iep, she was offered summer school. |
Last year you had to be below grade level in math and reading. This year you can qualify with only one. I have no idea how they’ll staff that. They should have hired before they offered. |
Ah, ok. So they changed the criteria. |
My kid is below grade level for reading and we didn't get referred. So it is more than just that. I have no clue what though. |
My elementary age DC goes. The instruction isn't vigorous and it's a pretty informal time. To me, it merely reinforces the previous year's attainments. That's good enough for me. |
No, it’s not wrong. And you aren’t guaranteed ESY with an IEP. But this year you can be well below grade level in just one area as opposed to both. -APS teacher |
This is a PP that said her son is well below in Deibels but not referred. I talked to a friend whose son was referred for math. So both our kids were below goal in their respective subjects. The difference is my kid did improve from the BOY and is expected to keep improving. Her son's score dropped from the beginning of the year assessment. So I would guess that is part of the picture. Kids can still be below goal but if they are improving no referral. |
