Single digits per million without a vaccine? In a major metropolitan area. He is dreaming. They will never open schools under those criteria.

Whether or not they perceive it, they are part of the counties they live in and they affect others through their actions. They go shopping and exercising and vacationing. Their kids’ teachers and staff come home to their own children and elderly parents all over the region. So they are subject to the same restrictions. We would not say private pools can open but public pools can’t. And so the same applies to schools.

Where have you been? That is literally what is happening. City pools are closed. Country club pools are open.

Close the bars, gym etc and let’s get this under control.

good lord have you done any research or read any scientific studies? The CDC, AAP and even Fauci all recommended that kids return to schools that can take the appropriate measures. Private school are and can do that. Take your ignorant statements to the public school forum where you and they belong.

Just because you threw money at the problem does not mean the virus cares. Look
At mlb. Teachers will be exposed. Nobody wants to get sick or die. You will be on the sub list right? It will be closed in a month Anyhow once it spreads. Science! Watch it in action this fall. But we are socially distanced and have a tent outside. You have never worked in a school. This looks good on paper and does not work in real life.

well that's not true - i for one would love to get this thing and just be done with it. either it kills me or it doesn't. sort of like the flu or a cold or the chicken pox. every year we hear about healthy young people succumbing to the flu, and that's when i finally go get my flu shot. i've looked at the data, i've looked at the numbers, the science, whatever, and determined that i'm at an extremely low risk of dying from covid-19. i'm well under the age of 65, i am not obese, i do not have high blood pressure, i do not have diabetes, i do not have an immune system disorder, and i am not male. additionally, i don't live in a multi-generation household in a multi-family dwelling unit. i actually have a better chance of dying in childbirth or from the actual flu than covid-19. and yes, i understand that any illness, viral or bacterial, may result in long term damage to the body. that's life. we're frail fragile carbon beings. we can't stop death. accept it.

if covid-19 behaved like the Spanish flu and young people under the age of 40 were literally dropping like flies, i'd be singing a very different tune. but covid-19 isn't like the Spanish Flu. it's not like AIDS or ebola, and it's not as deadly as SARS or MERS. it's not as bad as the Bubonic Plague. get a grip on yourselves, people.

in fact, i'd argue that most if the people on this board are at much as risk as i am. (maybe even lower, because i'm DCUM poor.) you and your precious beautiful little participation trophy children are going to be just fine.

you might not like herd immunity but that's where we are headed. that's the way we were always headed, but smart people thought they knew better than mother nature. i for one would like to expose my healthy strong immune system to the world again so i may continue to live long and prosper. we are all actively impeding and harming our own immune systems by hiding away from the world and masking up at large. but that's another argument for another forum.

yes, i want to get the virus. yes, i want the schools - public and private - to be open. open the bars, the gyms, the stores, the pools, MLB/NBA/NHL/NFL, the colleges. and yes - i'm already at work in person with my coworkers. we're all fine.

take a deep breath and step back from the short pier. humanity has survived much worse than covid-19. we're going to be okay. you're free to hunker down in your basement as long as you like or until the election or until inauguration or until there's a vaccine. life is for the living, not the dead - let the living get on with it.

open the schools.

If you want it, go get it. There are plenty of hot spots and I am sure you could volunteer or get a low wage job where you could pick up the virus. Let us know how that goes.

What a bigoted response.

Exactly. And she’s preaching about conduct to others. FYI professional athletes and leaders of countries got Covid, Lady. Not just “low wage” workers in the sunbelt states. Wow, what a racist response.

Sure, but that poster said she would like to get it and apparently low wage workers and POCs are statistically more likely to get it. So that poster should go where people are most at risk, where people have seen people - including family and friends - actually die. I guarantee the people who have been really suffering through this would think she was out of her mind and had no idea what she is talking about. And they would be right.

PP here; alright. i'm not going to respond to your unfounded, incorrect allegations. you're not going to get a passionate, emotional response out of me. my mother always told me that if you let someone into your heart and let them know your true feelings, they will turn your own emotions against you, and you'll lose. so i'm not going to get into an emotional argument with you. i'm not a racist. i'm not an elitist. i'm not an agist or an ableist or a misogynist or a misandrist. and i put three grandparents in the ground before the age of 30. you know nothing about me other than i think private schools should be open and that i don't think i can hide from an indiscriminate virus.

yes, the schools should be open - public and private. we are doing more damage to our children than you realize. not only will they fall behind their peers around the country and the world that have gone back to school, but this will hurt their socialization and emotional development. there are children who need to be in school to eat and be protected by adults. there are children with special needs who require specific attention and treatment. children need to be exposed to other children and adults, different lifestyles, different beliefs, different personalities. we are destroying our children's future for this.

and before you come at me and say, "children are dying from this! they can bring this home to their parents and their grandparents! they could give it to their teachers! your child will be traumatized if you sent them to school and they brought covid-19 home and killed grandma! you sent them to school and they gave it to their teacher and killed them! WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!"

i am. the kids need to be in school. especially the public schools. the rich kids will be okay - the poor and middle class ones won't. immigrant kids won't be okay, urban kids won't be okay, special ed kids won't be okay.

everything we're doing to "slow the spread" is just dragging this thing out. it's a virus. it's not going anywhere. we can't hide from it. it's new and novel. none of us have immunity to it yet. eventually, everyone has to get it, or everyone has to get the vaccine. we don't know when we will have a vaccine or how effective it will be. but we can't stop society to stop a virus. the virus does't care. it's going to spread anyway. it's going to spread regardless of who the president is. we can't keep living like this, its wholly irrational.

i'm not god, i don't think i'm immortal. i'm not going to live forever. something is going to kill me, someday. i don't know what that is right now and i prefer not to think of it. we are never ever going to stop death. people died before covid-19 and they will die after covid-19.

i could show you studies that it's safe for kids to go back to school, studies about t-cell immunity, studies that the lockdown didn't work, studies that the mask is a placebo before we can get a vaccine. you won't believe any of them, you'll say it's fake news, that i'm a Trumper, that i'm a neo-Nazi, that i want to kill grandma, that i'm a hateful selfish person. so why bother presenting you with facts?

who is the selfish person here - the one who wants everyone to hide away for an indeterminate amount of time until maybe the virus goes away, at the expense of everyone and everything else, or the person thinks that we all just have to live with it and make due? do you think we should do this for the flu? the cold? every election year?

i'm not the crazy person here just because i think we have to get on with it. we gave you all four months of our lives. at first, it was fifteen days. everyone said if we shut the schools in the spring, they could be open in the fall. you lied. you all led us on. it will never ever be enough. every time we make a compromise, you ask for more. we don't have any more leeway to give. every time we get good news, someone finds bad news. or tells us that the good news is a lie or that we're wrong. only your experts are right.

none of the smart people know what they're doing, that's the truth. no one has a plan. no one has a strategy. there is no policy to get us out of this. we have to live through it.

you want everyone else to stay home and stay away to protect *you.* this isn't about other people. this is about*you.* you're afraid and you want everyone else to be afraid.

if you really wanted to do something to make this better, instead of closing the schools indefinitely, why don't you worry about protecting long term group care facilities and nursing homes? that's where we're seeing the high number of deaths. that would do a lot more good. why don't you find ways to help low income communities where we have a lot of essential workers, minorities, immigrants, and vulnerable populations living in dense multi-generation, multi-family homes? that's where we are seeing high numbers of infections, but relatively low numbers of deaths.

look at the way this country treats children and the way we treat our elderly - that should speak volumes about our priorities.

i have lots of ideas and i'd prefer to help my fellow man rather than punish everyone at large. but you don't want to hear them because that would require you to leave your basement. have fun hiding away until next spring or until you get the president you want. good luck and may god bless and keep you.

Levels the playing field!

You’re a fool if you think this levels the playing field. Private school parents will just pay for nannies, tutors, etc. and their kids will still be doing “school” from an academic perspective. Hell, they’ll probably even be better socialized because, again, see above.

You ask many good questions, all of which have been or should be addressed to the current resident of 1600 Penn.

Seriously? After the public embarrassment your party took with the Russian collusion you still can’t let it go. Smh.

That really was embarrassing. Putin helps get Trump elected, and the Republicans insist there's nothing wrong with that.

I am not political in any way. Registered No Party (NP) in DC (so even if I were a Republican it wouldn’t help them). I just observe.

With all that is going on in this country it seems clear foreign operators are stirring up both sides. And have been since at least the 2016 election. So bashing trump for the Russian stuff is shortsighted in my view. It’s a piece of the puzzle only.

mD attorney General is already involved.

Gayles took an oath as a scientist and health worker to represent all constituents. Instead he had a misleading call with MoCo private schools Wednesday night where he share no data, no info, guidance, nor even brought up his current directive. Not doing his job as health director.

Worse, Gayles also told schools that he refused to even read their reopening plans, submitted all summer after months of hard work and consultation. Again, not doing his actual job again!

Then Friday night he dumps his directive order, effective next business day.

Folks, this is malpractice. This is not how civil servants should behave.

People are saying Gayles is behaving as if he’s paid off by the MCPs teachers union and Elrich.

Full stop. We have a corrupt, politicized Health Officer whose acting like a tool for politicians and not doing his job.

He’s toast. He’s shown his true colors; we’re dealing with scum. It may be incompetent it may be pretending, either way he’s not doing his actual job and now kids education is suffering.

This post has pinged my alarm bells for Russian trolls. The inconsistent capitalization, the strange syntax, the overblown accusations, the references to corruption and being paid off. If trolls are targeting FB, Instagram, and Twitter, why not DCUM? Isn’t it easier in an anonymous forum?

Yeah, Russian trolls really give a rat’s behind about schools in MoCo. Please.

Given that they work to get Trump elected and support him, I wouldn't be surprised that his petty followers would encourage using trolls to attack any local or national policy that upsets him. And this specific policy affects his son as well as the children/grandchildren of a lot of politicians.

Yeah, because that investigation showed...oh wait...it didn’t show that. Oh yeah, because that dossier said....oh wait..that came from the DNC and was all wrong. Please. You ran a candidate that everyone hated so much they voted for someone they hate more.

That PP is ignorant it is 10 or less per 100, 000. That is the standard. Per 1 mill.is not happening anywhere. The world will learn to live with this virus at low levels for a long time.
