Montgomery county orders private schools closed

Posted this on a different thread. What Mo Co is doing is actually just plain old ‘arbitrary and capricious.’ The privateswere following all the guidelines set forth by the state and CDC. Following the reopening plan that was announced. Then the county said, hey that’s not good enough. But they didn’t roll back the reopening phase we are in. So it’s arbitrary. Totally arbitrary. Mo co public schools were not opening for bigger reasons. The private schools have fewer overall logistics to worry about. Most don’t bus, they have higher student / teacher ratios and they are dealing with fewer students. Also no teacher unions. If Elriich wants to roll back to phase 1 and treat everyone the same, that’s something he should consider. But right now, I think a legal challenge could be successful. So let’s close the gyms, hair salons and restaurants serving indoors too. If it’s this unsafe. And it well could be. Then we need to think about all the places where Covid could spread. Stamp it out. Then get the kids back to school. I’m all for that it we adults could just get the job done this time. Yet foolishness prevails.

Well said.

mD attorney General is already involved.

Gayles took an oath as a scientist and health worker to represent all constituents. Instead he had a misleading call with MoCo private schools Wednesday night where he share no data, no info, guidance, nor even brought up his current directive. Not doing his job as health director.

Worse, Gayles also told schools that he refused to even read their reopening plans, submitted all summer after months of hard work and consultation. Again, not doing his actual job again!

Then Friday night he dumps his directive order, effective next business day.

Folks, this is malpractice. This is not how civil servants should behave.

People are saying Gayles is behaving as if he’s paid off by the MCPs teachers union and Elrich.

Full stop. We have a corrupt, politicized Health Officer whose acting like a tool for politicians and not doing his job.

He’s toast. He’s shown his true colors; we’re dealing with scum. It may be incompetent it may be pretending, either way he’s not doing his actual job and now kids education is suffering.

This post has pinged my alarm bells for Russian trolls. The inconsistent capitalization, the strange syntax, the overblown accusations, the references to corruption and being paid off. If trolls are targeting FB, Instagram, and Twitter, why not DCUM? Isn’t it easier in an anonymous forum?

Yeah, Russian trolls really give a rat’s behind about schools in MoCo. Please.

I think this is day 139 of "15 days to slow the spread."

The intent of the shut down was not to stay cloistered until the virus disappears or a vaccine is made.
It was to prevent overwhelming hospitals.

Were we successful?

There is no need for this.

+1. Agree. Why do people feel the need to denigrate each other? Express your opinion and move on.

Given that they work to get Trump elected and support him, I wouldn't be surprised that his petty followers would encourage using trolls to attack any local or national policy that upsets him. And this specific policy affects his son as well as the children/grandchildren of a lot of politicians.

There's every need, because apparently y'all didn't get the memo that public health means everybody, not "everybody except the rich people."

You are missing the point. It’s not about “rich people.” It’s about a government official unilaterally declaring that the CDC guidance is not sufficient. No explanation, not discussion. Just a directive at night. What other requirements would work? We don’t know. He just “decided.” That approach works in totalitarian regimes, but people here demand that those who work for them explain themselves.

Yes, as a private school parent, this is an example of the man always trying to put us down.

The amount of entitlement and selfishness here is shocking. School openings are delayed ONE MONTH, and people are acting like the sky is falling. Data is coming out every day that shows kids can be infected and transmit perhaps more than adults, and we still don’t know the long-term impacts of the virus. Get a grip! Set an example for your children. Care about your community. I’m a private school parent. I’m GLAD the county called this so admin and teachers can get busy creating a quality DL curriculum. And public schools will do the same, I hope. I don’t want teachers to die so that I’m not inconvenienced. The reason the US is in this terrible position is because of our mistaken notions of individualism and personal gain at the expense of Others and the collective good. Buck up! Sacrifice! We are in a global pandemic.

In the big scheme of things, let’s think about students in areas that might attend your private school that has been hard hit by Covid, those with health conditions, parents with health issues, or elder grandparents at home, or perhaps a frontline medical professional at home they don’t want to risk bringing the virus into school (All luck of the draw), and have to choose virtual while other classmates have benefit of attending in person. Aren’t they also part of your school community? What does your school mission state? Treating every student with dignity and kindness? Equity? Open you hearts people and see this is not the time to demand what you think you are owed - we all will survive for a couple more months virtually but in person, maybe not. School right now with these restrictions isn’t worth it and will by no means be the same. The things your children enjoy at school won’t happen. It will be a traditional “cubicle” type day which is not the way “good teachers” teach. Put the efforts in supporting for child/daycare funding if that is what you are seeking. Sure, some private schools that are extremely small with special needs might be able to open like day cares, but most schools find there are too many variables to control to be safe.

Equity? Really? Are the private school parents demanding their share of tax dollars back so they can pay tuition? No, they are asking to pay their share for the public good, and PAY MORE for their children. Who are you to declare what the quality will be and whether we should accept it. We CHOOSE in a free society; we don’t have the state choose for us.

No one is forcing you to pay tuition. Your choice.

BTW, your children will be fine despite all this hot air. They might even be better off for having a tiny bit of a challenge in their otherwise easy lives.

O, but they are forcing me to pay taxes to pay for your children. I go to jail if I don’t. Enjoy your privilege.

So don’t pay tuition and use the money for your taxes. Problem solved.

Then don’t indoctrinate our kids with your woke nonsense. You alienate us, makes us pay, and then mock us when we don’t want to expose our kids to your nonsense, all while we kick in taxes for you to do it. If anything, this experience puts school vouchers in a new light.

No one is making you pay. You are choosing to live where you live. You are choosing to send your child(ren) to private school. You are not a victim. You can choose differently. Do it and stop trying to convince yourself and others that you are being oppressed.

Really? Then discount our taxes for the amount of your school we’re not using.

He is trying to avoid an escalation of cases that would lead us to be out of control again. He said in the call with independent school heads that he is looking for single digits per 1 million people in new cases a day. As of the time of that call MoCo had a three day average of 131 cases per day.

And I would add he has no metrics to measure against, no goals, nothing. Plus - no other county in MD has come out with this directive, or even in the DMV area. So your argument of "selfishness, ignorance of science etc" doesn't hold water. Only Montgomery County. Just a convenient date of Oct. 1 the day after budget is set for funding of MCPS. I am a private school parent and I think if a private organization can meet CDC guidelines and provide a safe environment for my kids, why should I be ashamed of that?

DP. And before you all say that is unrealistic, look at the rest of the world. This is absolutely possible. It requires our action, tons more testing (make loud demands for that) and contact tracing, and more restrictions on gatherings, indoor dining, bars, and gyms.

Of course it’s realistic if he closes everything down. But he’s NOT. Why private schools, and not bars and restaurants and daycares and gyms...

I note I think it’s been established that Russian trolls work both sides of the political spectrum and for every group in order to sow disagreements and division. Saying they work only toward trump plays right into their hands. See how it works?

Seriously? After the public embarrassment your party took with the Russian collusion you still can’t let it go. Smh.
