Beyond the stupidity of these people, the arrogance that they know better than the doctors and nurses who are treating covid, how devoid of intelligence do these people have to be to not see the death and destruction from covid? How are they blind to it?

They think it is a conspiracy. Or just overblown or misreported by the media. My FIL (a Libertarian) believes that no one actually dies of covid. All the deaths are just people who die of other conditions; they just happen to have covid at the time. So, if a person who dies with covid had high cholesterol, or diabetes, or kidney disease, or asthma...he thinks that the deaths are directly related to those underlying conditions and not covid itself.
Somehow, we managed to get him to at least take the J&J vaccine.
Thankfully, since he himself is type 2 diabetic.

These people. I don’t mean to roll my eyes at your FIL, I am just in awe of the level of trust in right wing nonsense.

Interestingly and anecdotally, I read a doctor on Twitter who said that omicron is super charging people’s underlying conditions. Like diabetics with runaway blood sugar, for example. Whatever their underlying condition is (are), it’s running to a severe, almost uncontrollable version of it because of the damage the virus does in the body.
